Shoving a mid pair in the late stages of a hyper turbo

Ante 6k
Average 250k, 12 remain
SB - 156k
BB - 265k
UTG - 391k
HJ - 281k (Hero)
CO - 284k
BU - 257k
Hero has 9s9h
UTG folds
Hero shoves
Now I think this is an extremely standard hand in a hyper turbo. I don't think ICM implications are much of a factor in a hyper turbo when on the final two tables as the blinds move so quickly, and with a tiny stack (<4bb) I dont think you can pass up such a hand. Nevertheless, I shoved, and lost, and I put it down as standard. But my friend who was railing me said they disliked my shove, and later emailed me saying shoving there with 99s is suicide! This has me totally confused, and I was wondering whether or not they have a point, should I tighten up in such a spot? Or should I carry on as I was?
