HPO $2500, Construct our 3bet Range

700 runners to start, day 1 after dinner, very far from money

Starting stack: 25k

----

CO is a competent but not great player, he acts very fast on every street, very internet-ty

Blind 250/5+a

Competent, but not great player opens for min in the CO with T55000

Folds to us in BB with T35000

----

How do you like to build your 3bet range? Do you 3-bet a linear range? Do you prefer a polarized range? For your bluffs, do you pick stuff like Q9o/T8o/K6s? Or do you pick weaker hands to bluff with like K4o/Q2o/94s?

Any reads on his fold to 3b frequency? We're really deep and in a vacuum I want to say we don't take it down pre often enough to get too far out of line OOP. I'm not sure I'd even bother with the total junk hands.

so I don't play many MTTs but responding to threads is fun so here we go.

You're 70bb deep, so plenty of stack depth, but every combo you mention seems like a fold with the exception of maybe K6s, Q9o, and maybe T8o to a small raise.

In terms of a 3betting range (assuming you're not going to be 3betting huge so you need more value than bluffs) I'd 3bet JJ+ AKo+ AQs and something like AJo and A5s and A4s and some small pairs as bluffs.  3betting AQo seems like kind of a merge.

do you have any reads on pf opening ranges for villain, or how you think he would react to a 3bet or playing tendencies post?

the more passive he is post the wider I would defend pre. the more straight forward he plays pre to more willing I am to 3bet a wider and linear value range.  For example, if villain is opening extremely wide and defending fairly wide to a 3bet then I just go for a linear value range of TT+, AQo+ and don't even worry about including many bluffs (maybe something like A5s).  But that doesn't really sound like a competent player.    I don't want to be 3betting hands that could cause me to make a large mistake pre if 4bet without a read though.

I'm more interested in devising a tough default strategy to play against, so I won't go into specific reads. Anything read dependent will tend to be exploitative and whatever strategy we devise will tend to transfer to fewer situations and/or transfer less easily than if we devise a balanced default strategy.

That is very specific to define. Every single player at the table you need to have a different 3 bet range for each position, in my opinion. The construction of each range should contain more information about his post flop tendencies that even preflop, because given stack depth a lot of players are continuing with 80% or more of the range they are opening in certain positions. I rather play suited hands on this situations and 3b polarized.

You don't even have to have a 3betting range, closing the action from BB. So I concur with Raphael, just play accordingly to each player and each situation. Be open to flat with QQ vs some oppponents and 3b any 2 vs others sometimes.

IDK, my view on that is I would just flat everything by default and 3b exploitatively against anyone. If I was playing against a very tough opponent whom I cannot exploit, I would either flat everything, or flat and having a top 3% 3betting range that I would balance with bluffs with some suited hands / playable connectors (I don't think it matters so much which we pick, as long as we balance it all decently well).

Very general, but if I had to pick..

Q9o, T9o, K6s = easy flat vs a min raise

K4o, 94s = flat, sometimes fold

Q2o = fold

I'd 3bet mostly a value heavy range of something like AJs/AQo+, 88/99+, KQ etc. and then mix in some bluffs.  I'd prefer to have some blockers for my bluffs, such as Kxs/Qxs although it's not a must.
