How to Choose Between 3betting vs Calling?
I've been working on 3betting in my game lately. But I'm having a hard time in certain spots. For example,
UTG 60bb opens 2x
Hero UTG1 30bb AJo
Calling here seems like a big mistake. However, I don't know if I like a 3bet either. But the real problem is I don't even know how to go about figuring it out. I feel like I'm missing some fundamental part of the game that I overlooked early on in my studies.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I might just fold this one if it's a 9-handed table. Calling here is better than 3betting IMO.
Yeah I could've probably found a better example hand. I can definitely see myself folding here but I'd love to know how to figure out the EV of calling vs 3betting, etc. Maybe I can just run the different scenarios in HRC.
Hi there. New to the forums and currently grinding micro-low stakes, so accept my comment as something to consider, and, perhaps, something to work off of.
9 handed, depending on what we know of the UTG raiser, at 30BB I may consider folding, while working in a 3bet at some frequency. I struggle in spots similar to this and try to just simplify my actions. If you were deeper, I'd 3bet to try and get the pot heads up/generate a fold and fold to any 4bet.
AJo is just one of those hands I wouldnt want to see a flop with vs. an UTG raiser; we are dominated by a lot of hands the UTG raiser will have. Yeah we block some JJ, AK, AA, etc., but I think the hand just plays too poorly post-flop.
Yeah I agree, AJo is just not a great hand. Especially in this spot. But I think it's very "cuspy". It very easily could be the best hand here. I generally do fold in this spot but lately I've been wondering if I'm giving up too easily.
I do like the idea of mixed frequencies. That's something I haven't thought about or studied much. Seems like it would make life a little easier.
Constructing a calling range or a 3betting range or a mixed strategie with these two options is something vital but pretty complex. There is many variables to consider (villains strategy, stack sizes, position, ICM or ChipEv, etc.) that you need some flexibilty in the ranges you developped. Here at RIO there's plenty of videos to watch in this regards (Essential or Elite). Owen Shiels has some good videos about 3betting, so does Ryan Martin too, to name a few.
About the AJo example, I would rather call than 3bet tbh. It depends on UTG strategy if you have an idea of it.
Hope it helps and I wish you good luck at the table.
In the particular spot you described 3betting and folding are both fine I think. I have two different sets of preflop charts, in one it is almost always folding, in the other almost always 3betting.
The easiest way for your general approach would be to buy some ranges from rengeconverter, a training course or smth like that. That stuff is pretty expensive though and it is also not necessary to have the ranges down perfectly to be a winning player. Just take a peak at the vids ginzaboom has mentioned and then you should get a feeling of what to play in which way for a certain spot. Then you can either design your own ranges and stick to them or just try to ballpark it ingame.
