Hot 5.50/ 15K AK o UTG

First hand 3000 full stacks Blinds 10/20 I raise 3x UTG

UTG+1 shoves

Huge crazy field and I've invested $5 and 8 seconds of my time. Take a flip? Stars has juiced up the prize pool this week. I'm assuming a capped range for UTG+1 as I don't think he would do this with AA or KK which are the only 2 hands I'm really afraid of. A lot of the time I expect to see the same hand or QQ-99 or possibly AQs. Against this range probably 47%. If I double I think I can do a lot of damage

Just fold, even if he shows me 99 I would fold.

You don't double your EV if you double in chips and you are probably flipping against his range.

What could be the reason for him to shove?
I only see one answer: tilt.

This guy is probably on tilt, played a lot of tournaments and can't play anymore (wild range them, he could have anything)

so I call and lets probably flip.

Others reasons:
- look at his country, and search the exact time on the country, is 4-6am there? He will probably be drunk hahaha

So CAAAAALL!

But if this is a really good tournament and a important tournament for you, press fold and get him in the next 10 hands

5.50 is turbo tournement, i treat AK as turbo nuts/ same as AA KK
Depends how much variance is acceptable to you, folding can't be bad even if he is shoving 27o on you

I thought to myself that I should fold - 147 BB call is insane but I just clicked call. I couldn't help it. I've seen so many crazy shoves early in these mtts. I was fully prepared to lose because I knew I was flipping. I didn't mind losing my BI because I really hadn't invested any time. Channeling my inner gambler..

Villain had JJ and caught another J on the flop.....ha ha good start for him. Just wanted to see if everyone thought I was nuts.

Should have recorded it - shortest vid ever!

See, I understand your pain.

I would almost always call here and I just never know if it's correct.
According to odds calculator

AKo vs random range = 64%

So is that good enough to justify calling a shove without any reads?

The more I think about it the more it makes me want to say lay it down and wait.
But everytime i'm in this sich I just call and say "well, I had AK".

When you think you have a big advantage over the field you're supposed to be conservative and lay it down but I asked a top mtt player and he said he would call. It's in the top 10% of hands and why would someone shove with AA or KK? If you assume a capped range AK is doing very well. It's happened to me twice recently - i called both times and lost to JJ. Maybe I'll rethink it ha ha

So_Nitty 10 years, 1 month ago

This has happened to me three times recently and the first two times I ran into JJ which is sort of what I was expecting. Both times they hit trips which is overkill don't you think? Yesterday I got shoved on the 2nd hand of the hot 16.50 and it was AQS. I held for an early double. I know I'm not supposed to but can't seem to resist. I can certainly imagine it being the same hand often

I remember one time in a tourney I picked up AA first hand and open shoved as I thought I'd get a lot of calls from people thinking I'm tilting or doing it with a hand like 99-JJ AQs etc (which I did). Something to think about next time you're in that spot as there are some people that can do it with AA/KK :P

So_Nitty 10 years, 1 month ago

Oh, definitely. I know that.....it just seems like a waste of AA to shove and probably get a fold. I haven't seen that recently

  • were does he live? (drunk/tilt/type of person)
  • Some people here say that he wouldn't do that with AA/KK, well i disagree with that.

This happend to me a few times to. When a player opens UTG then his range is very strong so if UTG+1 has JJ+ he knows that you wouldn't fold a shove most of the time. Every fish knows that an UTG open is strength and that he want's to play a pot. And that it is very tempting for you to call the shove and he knows that. So the hands he has will be JJ/QQ/KK/AA. You are dominated. Easy fold, but good question!

Arguments for both I guess.
Non turbo I'm folding but in a turbo you can certainly accumulate chips much easier by having a 2x stack, and AK will be doing just fine vs a random range.
That being said it's also probably unnecessary variance in level 1 and the more sensible/conservative play would be folding.

I am folding all day long. If you are on a training site I would assume you take poker more seriously than the average person. As a result you are most likely better than most players on the micro and low MTT. why are you giving up you skill edge in the first hand? If you fold you will have lots of spots better than this.

Ditoushe 9 years, 11 months ago

i really.love to call there, cuz i dont c how he shive iwith aa or kk there, but still, better spot coming, dont have to rush the flip

So_Nitty 9 years, 11 months ago

That's the whole thing isn't it - we're assuming a capped range but not necessarily so and a flip with any pair. It's just that in the micro donkaments he might be doing this with AQ or AJs
