Day 3 of WSOP main event hand

Hello Can I get some thoughts on this hand which a friend played.

Day 3 of WSOP main event. blinds 800/1600

His stack 85k btn has him covered

Its the first hand of the day. He played with the btn 7 hrs the previous day.

Btn is viewed as a solid player. My freinds image is tight and has played pretty snug

btn Raised 3.3k I 3bet (SB)7.2k he made it 15.5k

I have 99s in the SB

Do I call, shove or fold

Thank you very much.

I'm 50/50 on 3 betting or flatting for the exact reason you're writing this post.

If we 3 bet we can end up turning a pretty good hand into a bluff. At this point we're leveraged into a 5 bet or fold, I think. If our own image is tight then I don't think the button is getting out of line and so it's rather optimistic to think we'll ever get it in vs. a pair we dominate when stacks are this deep in a well structured mtt.

Pretty sure as I write all this I am convincing myself that flatting pre is better even though we'll be OOP.

As played, it feels like a stack punt to get it in. I think I'd begrudgingly fold and realize I made a mistake here.

A case can be made for still flatting to set mine because we'll have 40+ bb even if we need to check/fold ... I don't know about that option. If the flop comes all undercards we could still get it in drawing near dead.

If you are going to 3bet I would make it at least 9k, since you are OOP and over 50bb deep. This spot really depends on dynamic, there are lots of players I would happily get it in against here. However it sounds like the dynamic your friend and the button have is not conducive to getting 99 in preflop. Also, since this is the main event, which is a very unique tournament, a lot of players are not willing to get all-in without a very strong hand.

For all of these reasons I would flat preflop, as played I would probably fold unless you think the button is capable of getting out of line or will play very face-up postflop.

Grayson ... firstly congrats on another deep Main Event run ... but I was wondering if you could elaborate on your line of "there are lots of players I would happily get it in against here." because you then state "Also, since this is the main event, which is a very unique tournament, a lot of players are not willing to get all-in without a very strong hand."

Getting it with 99 in the ME with a 50bb stack doesn't seem optimal (to me) vs the weaker player pool that the ME comprises of as a combination of experience/good structure/deep stacks will surely give you better spots to take advantage of player mistakes and weaknesses?

Thanks tramstop. I should have worded my statement better. You are right that the main event has so many weaker players that it is good to pass on marginal spots, since there are plenty of opportunities to easily accumulate chips.

That being said, you will still find plenty of players in that main event that will 4bet shove 50bb with hands a lot weaker than 99, or have a fairly high 4bet bluffing frequency in this spot. Against players like that I would happily 3bet with the intention of calling a shove or 5bet shoving over a 4bet.

In this particular situation, with the current dynamic between the players, I would not advocate getting it in with 99. If they had a more aggressive dynamic, getting it in could be the optimal play.
