Bounty Builder 530$ (RE-POST FROM THE HIGH-STAKES SECTION)

Hello everyone,

Ive been following the forum for a while now so the time has come for my first post. In short, Ive been grinding out the lower stakes 5-22$ tournaments on party/888 for a couple of months since I switched to MTTs from the Micro CG grind and its been going great. Anyways, I won a ticket for the 530$ bounty builder but based on my inexperience in online MTTs and the fact that my biggest buy-in (online) till now was 22$ I feel as if Id need some solid advice on how to approach these "High rollers". I am using solid ranges, probably well-protected so my questions are mainly related to population tendencies on these stakes or maybe you could share how you guys approach these tournaments in general(if you feel like it of course).

I posted this at the high stakes section but thought that guys here might give useful advice as well, I am open to everything (also time is pretty limited since the tournament is tomorrow).

Thank you and GL!!!

As you're solid at lower stakes I think the most important thing to keep in mind is not too overadjust. You'll still encounter plenty of weak players even at high stakes and you have little to gain from drastically changing your game at high stakes. Try your best and play a solid game you're comfortable with. You'll also meet some players that will be very tough to play against, but there is not much you can do about that in the short term.

Too many regulars make the mistake of overcompensating and completely changing their game when moving up in stakes significantly because they feel compelled to, and hardly are successful. Just focus on playing as well as you can and don't be too distracted by the high buy-in amount, the tournament won't be that different from what you're used to playing.

However, I agree with what Pierre said in the other thread - if you can, try and play satellites for $50-$100 Tournaments instead to move up in stakes more gradually. But given you already have the ticket for the $530, what I said above applied. Hope it goes well, best of luck!

One thing I would suggest, that I don't think many people would bring up, is not to multitable when you play this MTT, you don't want to distract yourself and make any form of error (in a tournament which will have such a significantly huge impact on your ROI) because you're focusing on a $5 MTT where 1st will barely earn you more than the buy in to the MTT. Don't even consider 2 tabling, just play this one event and keep distractions to an absolute minimum.

First of all, thank you for replying. I could not cash but it was a great experience and I think i gained more by realizing that the skill gap between low and high stakes is not as big as I thought, they seem beatable. My initial expectations were clearly unrealistic(yes, still, there were some people with 1m+ cashes but also enough recreationals to make up for that) due to my really short experience in tournaments. As a result, Im much more optimistic about the future and motivated to beat the game, so imo thats even better than cashing. Anyways, GL and thank you both for sharing your opinions, really beneficial for me. <3

Experience is sometimes a lot more important than actual money earned. You'll improve much quicker if you play against tougher competition, and think about why their play is more effective. At the end of the day, this is only one tournament, so you should never go into the event expecting too much (as it's such a small sample size), but at the same time, seeing as it is only one tournament, you've got a great chance to run well and scoop a big result (rather than worry about having to play against the same tougher competition, week in and week out), so don't go into it too despondently either. As you said, due to the satellite system on partypoker, there will be a lot of recreational players which you can target, and give yourself a really good chance to cash and massively boost your ROI. Just enjoy each tournament you get a chance to enter and make the most of it, (whether you cash or not) which will help in all future tournaments.
