Best strategy to beat $40 Live MTT starting 125BB 20 min level.
Hi Everyone,
This is Gino, this is my first post.
2 weeks ago I just started playing a local charity tourney that I want to learn how to win consistently in.
I've played in it 5 times in a field of 50 to 70 people each time.
I placed 1st, 14th, 4th, 20th, and last night like 30th. Only cashed on 1st $550 and 4th $170.
So $720-$200= $500 in profit. - $30 in tips $470 total earned. which most of I lost in $1/$2 cash game that I didn't have the bankroll for.
So I would really appreciate any tips on this tournament structure I plan on playing Mon, Tues, and Weds.
I'd say I'm a thinking player and I try to take advantage of weak tendencies but I feel like there's gotta be something I don't know that I can use.
thanks,
Gino

It would help to know the exact structure of blinds/antes. If it's a fast structure with blinds doubling at certain levels then this is mostly going to be a luck fest since 20 mins is very fast for live. For instance if it goes from 200/400 to 300/600 (or 400/800) rather than 250/500 that would make a big difference. Also some of these smaller type of tourneys have no antes which requires significant adjustments.
Overall I imagine the field is very soft which will make up for some of the luck fest/turbo issues. Still it's going to be fast and you're going to need to get involved and make some hands. Pay attention and play TAG focusing on position and you will likely have an edge based on that alone (since the players are probably terrible with no concept of stack sizes, bet sizes, position etc.).
thank you so much for your input.
yeah the blind structure goes:
100/200
200/400
400/800
500/1000
1000/2000
and so on. I've seen it 20k/40k in the final table.
you are absolutely correct, it is a soft field with the exception of a few players. but most have no idea on stack sizes and bet sizes. you know I read a lot about poker and watch videos and wonder how can these live players be so bad. even when I'm representing the winning hand so well they still call.
I do see TAG playing style working vs them.
thanks again for your insight. I really appreciate it and looking forward to next weeks tourneys.
Hi Gino, good luck in building your bankroll. My advice is in these type of tournaments you will be facing an extraordinary amount of loose passive players. You often see an opening raise or limp, and 5-6 callers. Do not fall into the trap of playing borderline hands passively in this situation. Be tighter overall, but if you do feel like playing a borderline hand, do it in position and raise it.
Also, get to know the players in your room. Best advantage about live poker.
Best of luck!
That is a VERY fast/bad structure. Luck is going to be a major factor, much more so than any decently structured tournament. Still if the players are atrocious you will have an edge (but probably not that big).
Personally I wouldn't set out to grind this tourney with any regularity. If the same bad players are in the $1/2 game you are probably better off focusing your efforts there.
I agree with Ralphy.
IF you want to improve your tournament skills this is clearly not the type of tournament to do it. Structure is awful even for a hyper. If its building bankroll then cash game is where you have to be, try to get stacking or selling action to afford that game.
About the tournament just forget to play with any speculative hands, play only with your premiums and when everyone is short apply not only GTO to pick your shoving spots but also try to squeeze spots that only bad players give you fold equity. don't trap players that just like to see flops, as they don't any idea of sizes you can get away with reshoving a lot, always pay attention to their open size bet tendency.
