ABC not enough to win anymore

Hey guys,

I've never been a winning player online, so I've been looking at where I can improve my game. I've watched a bunch of videos here, but mainly from another training site. I've always played too much of a LAG game, but without much reasoning. I would just 3-bet on the button with TJ suited because I could without applying much of a thought process. Don't get me wrong - I've never really been a complete donkey and I've had the odd result I was always told that ABC poker should beat the lower stakes, but I just never had the discipline to grind it out. Now I've adjusted my style to a much tighter game, I've played pretty much all of the low stake SCOOP comps on Stars along with a few others along side them and some low stake comps on Party. I've played just over 6,000 hands over 46 tournaments and I'm in just £175 ($215) profit with an ROI of 38%. I feel like I'm playing pretty solid, but I'm obviously being exploited too much as the blinds increase and we get closer to the money, so I guess it's a matter of just watching more videos and applying what I learn to my game.

How have you adjusted to the game in the last five years?

I saw this post and was hoping to come and offer you some help but it seems like you've been playing the game much longer than I have. I played before black Friday, but stopped afterwards until about a year ago.

You may have already seen this but if not, you could probably start here (MTT Learning Path) and get lots of helpful info. Maybe learning a bit more about ICM would be helpful.

One other thing... You said "I've played just over 6,000 hands over 46 tournaments and I'm in just £175 ($215) profit with an ROI of 38%"

Over what timeframe was this? If you're playing online volume is the only way you will overcome variance. Most of the MTT players I know, even at the lowest stakes, are playing over 20 tournaments a day.

This is since the start of the SCOOP on Stars. I'm planning on playing as many low stake SCOOP comps as possible (alongside some other comps at the same time) while I've got the time off work. After a decent sample of hands I should have some stats to work with and improve my game.

6k hands is nothing and a 40% ROI would be very good (at low stakes it is solid at least), however even after many thousands of MTTs you are usually not very close with your true ROI to your expected ROI. LAG TAG ABC... you should forget all this. You should look at each decision point and ask yourself what is the most profitable decision in that spot. Obviously this is hard to do, but there are tons of resources out there to help you improve in that.

  1. In the micros you can absoloutly crush by just playing ABC.
  2. If you have the money , buy From The Ground Up MTT. It will bring you up to speed to modern days poker.
  3. 46 tournaments is nothing...
  4. Posting in the forum is great, keep it up and learn.
  5. Because of your question you relly have to work on your mental game! For example, me at the beggining of every session i listen to some eyes closed relaxation hypnosis.
  6. MTT poker = Variance. Work on your mental game and be preppared for losing months. The best players in the world have them!
  7. Obviously this is not your main income source, at least not yet. Treat this as an opportunity to invest in the future,by learning. Get a tracking software , or record your screen with OBS (it is free). Than analyse your play even if you have to sacrifice a session. It is worth it.
8.Enjoy it brother, at the end of the day that is the most important thing.
