I think the decision to choose to make videos for a training site is interesting. I'm very curious to hear honest replies from the coaches on what went into the decision to make videos. Surely there is some negative EV from having your thought processes versus specific opponent available for them to see (and you not even knowing if they watched your video or not) or most of all IMO your hands that did not reach showdown available for all to see. Was the decision to make videos an easy one? How big of a factor is the enjoyment or the prestige for you? Do you think your views on the matter are the same or different from your peers?

fitzroy12 years, 2 months agoI'm not an instructor, but I've had coaching and my coach said he actually learns too while coaching his students. Also, it provides some level of guaranteed income and acts as a break from the daily grind. I would guess these advantages outweigh the minor downside of revealing your thought processes that only a fraction of the player pool will see anyway.
Parker Muir12 years, 2 months agoI agree with a lot of what fitzroy said. I think that reviewing my own play and thinking critically/explaining the lines I take definitely helps improve my own game as well.
I also enjoy making/watching videos, since I came up the ranks watching tons of content across DC, Leggo and CR, it feels good to put out some of my own.
In addition it's nice to differentiate as a professional poker player by doing other things than just grinding hands every single day.
Sam Lang12 years, 2 months agoIf it wasn't for the fact that it was phil that asked, I probably would have declined making videos. I primarily play poker for the enjoyment, and have enjoyed making videos and learning/talking about poker, and have/will learn a bunch and hopefully get better as a player. I'm a student also, have a lot of spare time, so some variance free beer money is a big plus. I am also somewhat confident that I'm not giving too much away for the stakes I play, and will adjust when playing to different players, and have asked mates who watch them to let me know if I say anything that is exploitative so I can fix it. Not knowing who and who hasn't watched the videos can be a bit annoying, but for me the pros outweigh the cons. Also there's getting your name out there in the poker community for future possibility of sponsorship or something which is a cool thing to consider, as well as coaching requests which can be somewhat lucrative and enjoyable.
