I am very satisfied with Bovada and thank my lucky stars it's around POST Black Friday. However, I continue to scratch my head on the fact they limit to 4 tables. From a business perspective, why in the world do they limit players to 4 tables? I'm curious (im sure in this community multi-tabling more would be the norm.) do the bulk of players only play a couple tables? From an IT background are they limited on server space? Software limitations? I just can't fathom why they would limit their player pool...is this getting more players to look elsewhere (BJ, Sportsbetting, casino)? Increasing their their bottom line because the other spots are better for Bovada? Just a few thoughts on the topic. I'd love to hear another person's opinion. Thanks for reading guys.
I think some sites like to provide an enjoyable haven for recreational players hence the anonymity and therefore hudless environment. That's my guess anyway. You're supposed to just use whatever reads you get that day at that table. You would think that encouraging muti-tabling would increase profits......
Businesses take actions that make them the most money. Bovada, like any good profit maximizing company is doing the same. They choose 4 tables because it increases their profit. Not sure why though as I don't work there. Perhaps its something about player retention.
There are other networks to play on, you know? I mean, of course Bovada has nice traffic and a balanced SNG/MTT schedule but they also have a lot of downsides, too. Terrible software, no HUD support, no rakeback, they limit you to 4 tables, and they have this weird "anonymous poker" method which although it would be nice to see the "option" to play at these tables (like zoom) to have it just be the way ALL games are on the network is a little inane when we're talking about poker in the first place. Additionally, the fact that they have states in the US which they refuse to operate in makes me question their commitment to the market entirely.
For using my HUD and playing against regs, etc - I play on WPN. For everything else, I play on BetOnline. I have money on FullFlush and Intertops, too but Tops is beyond dead and FullFlush just doesn't have the traffic that BetOnline does, has NO SNG traffic, and is using the same software anyway so, I've put more than double the money onto BO that I have onto FF.
The fact is that the way things are currently, every network we have as an option has issues and downsides. Everything is all fragmented, spread apart, offshore, and unregulated and it sucks. Now that I love poker so much I hate the results of Black Friday and I hate dealing with the restrictions and limitations it puts on me personally, as well as the rest of the US. I've had a conversation or two with people close to me lately about what our options are for spending a little time abroad because yeah...I'm finding it a little obscene and also surreal that here I am in my early 30's, in 2014, and I have government restrictions and limitations placed upon me concerning a game I want to play online. In the US. Just unbelievable.
zegota10 years, 6 months agoThe reason live poker is so much easier than online is not because live pokers are inherently worse than online poker players. It's that no matter how good you are, you can only play one table. So, if only like 20% of players at a casino on a given day are any good, that means on average, only 1 or 2 people at your table will be any good. Online, it still may be that only 20% of the people online at any given time are any good. But those 20% are probably taking up like 70% of the seats because all the people who are any good are multi tabling and most of the people who are just playing for fun are only sitting in one or two games. Bovada is probably trying to strike a balance between keeping multi tablers happy and keeping the games fishy enough that it a. keeps the multi tablers happy and b. keeps the casual guys from getting blown away too quickly so that hopefully they'll have some fun and redeposit when they inevitably go busto. We think removing the caps would be good for us and them, but would it? Games would definitely get tougher and might dry up. I'm ok with how it is now, and I just use the rest of my screen real estate on some other site. All that said, their software is so crappy it wouldn't surprise me if it is some kind of limitation. Although that wouldn't really make sense, cuz as far as I know there's no cap on tournaments and I know I can load up at least a few tournaments while I'm still 4 tabling cash.
Zegota, I think the fishy aspect of your thoughts does make a lot of sense. Predominantly in the form of regs vs regs and isolating yourself to one or two fish per six max for example. I know i'd sit at the same limit and play maybe 12 tables. Thus eventually impacting win rate maybe not really maximizing win potential without rigorous game selection. Anonymity resulting in just playing high avg pot size, which doesn't necessarily translate into pure fish...it could just be a few samples sizes of big hands vs big hands. Thank you for your input.
You should try table selecting by using a high plyrs/flop percentage as your main factor. That's assuming you're comfortable playing against loose players who are more sticky post flop.

Thanks for your input guys. I just don't get it but I think both your points are very valid.
