The Pursuit of Poker Excellence

I am writing this journal article to reflect on and look back on so I complete all my poker goals for the upcoming month. My poker journey has been a real fun one so far, with satisfactory results. I have had many great memories and experiences playing this game, although as of late I have been breaking even and playing sloppy poker. In addition to this I have been lazy with my note taking and studying off the table. I feel I haven't been playing my A+ game for a while and I will be taking a month off to focus on videos, books, theory, and having a solid understanding of many different poker tools.

My gameplan for the upcoming month is to immerse myself with knowledge from many different sources. This includes watching videos on here, reading poker books, and understanding how different poker tools work in depth. My only focus for the upcoming month is to study poker and take notes. I have a great passion for the game, and want to further hone my skills. I feel that as of late I have been putting too much work on the tables and not enough off the tables. This has caused frustration, endless hours for small profit, and burnout.

I am hoping that I can look back on this post in a month and complete all the goals I have set for myself. I have made specific goals that I am hoping to achieve in the following month:

  1. Read at least three new poker books

  2. Watch 1-2 RIO videos per day

  3. Become more active on poker forums and help analyze spots.

  4. Learn poker tools in great detail

I am hoping that a month from now I will achieve all these goals. Hopefully this post will motivate me to achieve my poker goals for the upcoming month.

Good luck with your goals. When I get in a rut like this, a bit lazy, not thinking clearly, not paying attention, I always go back to the fundamentals and drill them constantly while I play. I try to play so abc it can't possibly work, but it does every time. Just my 2 cents on how to refocus.
Cheers.

Thankyou! I have been more self aware of myself and noticing that I have been making more plays lately through emotion, and not logic. I have been making very -EV plays and decisions because I am not studying enough and playing while having stress. I believe that poker should NEVER be stressful or unenjoyable. I will probably play a bit, but only to test new theories and ideas. As of now I am not concerned about profit, just educating myself more.

IMO you shouldn't watch two videos a day. From personal experience I think you're probably better off analyzing that one video a bit more instead of watching another one. I'm not saying it's impossible to do more than one video, just saying it's probably better to go more in depth into things rather than watching as many as possible.

Be sure to leave time for the other stuff in you life beside poker. Don't forget to go out with friends, sleep well, eat well, work out, live a healthy life.
I seem to work best when I am in good shape, both physicaly and mentaly.

Quick update if anyone is still following. Been keeping up for the most part with RIO videos. Finished reading another poker book that I was almost finished with. Going to continue reading janda with the focus on applying the theories to my games, I will only be focusing on the theories and try my best to not be results oriented. My goal is to play X amount of hands and apply theories from books and videos.

Hey, thanks for asking. I have been studying/playing intensively but it is difficult balancing it with school. I have been keeping up with RIO videos for the most part, but did not reach my goal of finishing Janda. I am halfway though. I am still constantly reviewing my notes each day, and hoping it can elevate my game.

Best of luck to you with your journey. You seem passionate about the game and that's a huge factor with improving as a player. Take it day by day and the pieces will come together. Nice post and I'm planning on doing somewhat of the same in the coming days. Take care.

Thanks... going to take some time off and make a more detailed plan. Taking a vacation, best of luck to everyone!
