Studying game theory and poker math
Hi all.
Up until this point i have never really focused on the mathematical aspect or the game theoretical aspect of poker and i think this is something which is holding me back, and needs to be addressed. I have always been good at maths, so performing the calculations shouldn't be a problem for me and i have a decent understanding of general game theory from my time as an Economics student. However, i am not entirely sure how to apply this to poker. Does anyone have any good starting points of videos/books which would help me to do this?
What are the main things i need to learn? What are the calculations that i need to understand that i will be using most often? Obviously i do use maths when playing, but it has predominantly been subconscious calculations that i have been performing to work out whether i have direct/implied odds to make a call rather than a case of i need to defend x% of my range and this hand ranks inside the top x% and so i should call with it or whatever. Also, one thing i have never taken the time to understand is working out how many bluff/value combo's i should have at each stage in a hand. For example, if i bet 7 into a pot of 10, is there a set ratio of bluffs to value which i should have or does it depends on other factors? This part of my game is considerably weaker than most other parts at the moment i think.
Basically any information which anyone can give on what exactly i need to learn and/or where is a good place to begin learning would be very useful.
Thanks everyone.
