Structured / Focused Learning

With so many new concepts and ideas to be considering all at the same time for an amateur learning the game, it is easy to fall into bad habits from lack of concentration or having too many things to think about.

Over a long period of time I find that only a few things become automatic (like an autopilot), and it takes a long time for things to sink in.

How do most players that are serious about improving their game structure their learning time-effectively, and how do you successfully set achievable/measurable goals (in such a random variant world as poker) to that end?

Also, what is the best way to psyche yourself up for a long session?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated
