Specializing in a specific poker discipline in order to learn more efficiently
Hi
I don't really know how to start off this post, so I'm just going to jump in and get right to it:
I need to specialize in a single poker discipline, but I'm not sure which.
Over the past few months, I've realized m biggest losses come from jumping from tournaments to cash games, from rush to HUNL, etc. I'm close to break even after rake, and I hope that by focusing my attention towards a single discipline, I will learn much faster and grow into a better poker player; a specialist, even. I've only got maybe 10 hours of play in omaha, and the same goes for stud/razz, so I would have to focus in a NLHE discipline.
I've played more hands of Rush/Zoom poker than any other discipline, simply because of the sheer amount of hands I can play in an hour 4-tabling rush poker (1000+ hands per session of 1/2 hours). However, rush poker doesn't particularly spike interest in me; I often find myself mindlessly clicking away, and turning to auto-pilot mode, which I do not like.
Tournaments are for me the most fun, adrenaline wise. However, I'm a slight loser after 305 tourneys (-6% ROI), and I am therefore not sure whether I should start with them. I have done better in the last 3 months (+4% ROI) but I am still unsure, since it would probably take quite a while before I see any increase in my bankroll. I would enjoy it a lot when I win, but not sure if it would be as fun when I lose, which would be most of the time.
I've never really explored into non rush 6-max cash games, and I feel like I would need slight adjustments before I felt at ease, but they are a very viable option. I play nearly all poker in 6-max format, except tournaments, so the adjustements to be made would most likely be towards recognizing game flow/dynamics.
Finally, HU NLHE. In total, I've maybe played around 1000 hands of heads-up NLHE, but it is, to me, infinitely interesting. I feel like I could study it for hours on end, and still not get bored. Plus, in my short-lived HUNL career, I've done quite well, and ended a slight winner, even though I was running 2.5 BIs under EV. The only problem is, I'm restricted to playing on FTP at the moment, and the lowest HU tables start at NL50. If I choose to learn HUNL, I'm not sure whether I should start with another discipline and then transfer over when I have the appropriate BR, or if I should deposit 1k, not knowing much except for what I could learn from videos, and wing it with 20 BIs.
Any suggestions of which discipline is the best? Thoughts?
Thank you for your time.
