Specialize in one game? Or risk being avg in everything?

Hey guys,

I've been a break even player at 100nl 6max over the last year or so. I haven't been putting in too much effort with poker lately (which shows in my results), but Run It Once has rekindled my enthusiasm. I was hoping for some advice about how to direct my focus now that I've committed to putting more effort into poker.

Is it better to focus on just one format? (ie. NL cash, PLO cash, or MTTs) or should I study all of them, but maybe not be that great at any of them?

Since Run It Once just opened, I was thinking of watching every single video from Day 1, but I'm worried that if I don't specialize in any one format, I might be a breakeven player at everything.
FWIW...I am a full-time teacher and play poker on the side. I have a good bankroll for the stakes I play, so it’s ok if I lose a little while learning other games.

Thanks for your suggestions...

as with all things, we are all individuals and have our own capabilities and prowess. On a personal note, I specialize in two games(NLH and PLO) and minor in a couple more that are fairly easy to play... that's about all I can handle and still have positive expectations.

If I were in your position, playing poker on the side of a full-time job, I think I would choose to focus on learning PLO cash. You clearly have a decent handle on NLHE and can always come back to it if you want or if you stumble upon a juicy game. I think PLO would be great for you as it will likely be fun and keep you interested, as it looks like you've lost a little interest in NL. Also I think it will be a very profitable pursuit given the state of both games right now.

I don't think it makes sense to learn NLHE MTTs and PLO cash at the same time though (too much effort/time), so I would just run with the PLO cash, keep your hold 'em game somewhat sharp and eventually become a dual threat.

One thing is for sure, you've come to the right place.

With the state of the games nowadays u kinda have to specialize to be able to maintain a decent edge in a game and move up stakes to the point ur making serious $

I think you can learn something from all the games and it will often make you better at other games than the one you are currently practicing/studying.
If you want to stick with no limit, I would suggest that you put some time in at HU tables, as that will make you a lot better at shorthanded play as well.
