Running a Poker Site: Two Months In
Greetings everyone,
As you all know, Run It Once Poker has been live for almost two months now. It’s been an electrifying experience for our team, and we’re grateful for all the feedback and support we’ve received so far. With that said, we felt it was time we share our thoughts on this experience with you.
Phil’s first update on running a poker site has arrived. Phil shares his feelings on the last two months and provides an update on our plans moving forward.
Please share any comments, questions, or feedback below.
Thanks for sharing this experience with us! :)

Suggestion: I have been studying to play 3-way Spin n' Go games and I think that Splash n' Go games would be awesome in the future! Also, any hints as to when a mobile app will be available for iPhone? I know it used to be a high priority item on the roadmap. Is it still? :)
Hey Doc,
Thanks for the suggestion! As Phil mentioned, we're working on adding SNGs, we have some cool ideas but that's all I can share at this time. We'll release additional details at a later date.
Yes, a mobile app is still a high priority item on our roadmap, but at this time, we don't have an ETA.
Insightful post, Phil.
As someone who plays ms-hsnl cash I can say that I definitely relate to some of what you said with regards to players coming over.
I love the idea of RIO, and definitely, want to play on your site at some point soon. The main thing holding me back is the lack of games at the limits I play (in addition to limited deposit options for my country).
HHs being downloadable/importable to HM/PT for review/progress tracking is also extremely important.
The software overall looks great (though table/felt colour options would be nice) and splash the pot is an awesome idea that I look forward to experiencing.
With that all said, those few issues are still making it difficult to justify the process of moving money on-site. I'm sure there are a fair few players who are of the same opinion, who have the client downloaded, and are interested/willing to put some serious volume in on RIO once those issues no longer exist.
Ultimately I think that the overall product looks great, and I really look forward to future updates down the line.
Thanks, angeles, for sharing your own experience and reasoning. It's really helpful to get feedback like this as we figure out what exactly to prioritize.
I'm not at all surprised by the things standing in your way, and I hope we can clear them out soon! If you ever are ready to play, please feel free to reach out to support and ask about deposit options. Some methods are easier when we work with you.
Thank you for the kind words and your (hopefully-near-future) support!
EVERYONE PLAY PLAY PLAY
Phil Galfond, how does RunItOncePoker looks like in your dream? :)
At what average number of simultaneous players you will be able to say to yourself "I've accomplished what I wanted the moment I decided to start a poker site" ? :) [L.E.: "... and from now on I am freerolling :) "]
Will handhistories be downloadable after the next update? If so I'm going to take the leap and switch sites :)
Hey freenachos,
We're working on implementing downloadable HHs, and we are hoping to include it in the next update, but can't make any guarantees.
I'll drop a comment here when we announce our next update relase.
I play on rio occasionally to push the site, I wish though there Was PLO 500 added. I also sit at 1k and even though Im a rec nöbody hops in, lol
I also would like to See more blogposts from rio coming about Updates and project, it keeps me more interested
Actually that's probably a funny side effect of anon tables. If I see a table with one person sitting and have no other data on them, I definitely assume they're a solid reg comfortable table starting. (I play on Ignition though, not RIO)
I am still excited to come play but after I downloaded the software a few months back i logged out..
The reason being was not for lack of wanting to play, or that the software didnt look top notch. It was that the Entry level was set way too high at 10 euro for 1 NL buyin..
I want to muck around for a while and get comfortable but setting the initial buy-in so high makes me not want to start playing. I would want 2NL and 5NL as options. But 10NL makes me uncomfortable to need to put such a large 1st deposit, that I just didn't.. 2NL and 5Nl are micro stakes and sudo play money tables and new players (i think) would do this.Too me these levels are needed to feed the higher levels and without them i think traffic just won't be there.
If/when you add these lower buy-in levels I will be there the next day.
Hey Cheehc, we have 4NL! Come back to us :)
Phil Galfond will there ever be 2NL level as well? And a lower level for PLO as well?
hey Phil, when is Runitonce going to accept BTC deposits?
Hey Potripper,
We're working on adding BTC as a payment method, but at this time we don't have an ETA. When we have an update, we'll make a public announcement.
I would like zoom tables option with a capability to use hud there and leave regular tables as it is so every player type can decide witch format they want to play
Poker players worldwide do not want anonymous poker, not even recreational players.
That is an incredibly inaccurate blanket statement. In my experience, you are one of a super small minority w/ this stance. I cannot even begin to tell you the number of times I've played live poker and listened to a fun player talk about online poker and how much they love the idea of a HUDless, anonymous poker site. I'm also fairly sure studies have shown that people are more likely to gamble when playing anonymously than when their real identity is known/tied to a specific screenname. And it makes perfect sense from a psychological POV when you think about it - people hate the shame/embarrassment that comes w/ doing something that might be considered bad/silly/stupid in front of their peers.
Just last night I was playing a home game w/ a bunch of my friends (legit seven guys who are the exact target of a site like RIO Poker - smart dudes, terrible at poker, lots of disposable income, probably play poker 1-2x/month, used to play online back in college) and talk turned to how I play online poker and how "they'd never put money online today when everyone has that thing w/ all of the #'s telling them how I play". I explained how there's this new site out there where those "things" aren't allowed and how the games are anonymous and they all were like "holy shit, that's amazing, I might actually start playing online again".
I'd posit this is the exact reaction Phil and others had in mind when they came up w/ RIOP and structured it in the way they did.
If people try RIO Poker, they'll soon decide they like "playing the player" and return to sites with screen names.
Copernicus I don't agree with you. Think this site has a lot of potential. I would def like to play on RIO, but the things holding me back right now are:
- No handhistory (no way of tracking results/reviewing game)
- Lack of action
Also I'd be pretty curious to see if the 5.75% rake is sustainable. Sure there is 51% rakeback with splash the pot, but I would like to know how the avarage pot size being higher influences things.
So here are my first impressions from the site:
- annoyingly hard to click "Sit back in". I was only able to click sit back in once I was about to be kicked off the table
- not being able to resize tables is really annoying
- splash pots are a lot of fun
- there are weird graphic glitches, like white flashes and sometimes the cards don’t show. Sometimes the flop is shown for a moment and then lost (I play on a mac)
- the app just crashed on me and i could reconnect to my tables. It still says money is in game somewhere, but I just can't find a way to get back the tables
Most of this is really annoying and frustrating, as the glitches simply make it really hard to recognize what is happening. I would love to support and play on the site, but these are major factors. Not being able to get back to the table I was just crashed from, is super annoying.
I really hope you guys and girls can make some changes soon, as I would love to play here.
Hi Basa Tohanj,
We're sorry to hear you're running into troubles with graphics glitches and crashes. It would be really helpful if you could send in your logs in to our support team so we can investigate the issues further. If you're willing to do this here is an article that will walk you through retrieving your logs. Please send them to support@runitonce.eu
As far as the "sit back in" issue you were experiencing, this is a known issue, and our team is working on updating this as soon as possible. We're also working on implementing resizeable tables. We know this is an important feature for poker players and we're doing our best to update this as soon as possible.
We're hoping to release an update soon that will address stability, performance and a variety of bugs. We hope you'll try out the software once this is released and let us know if your experience was improved.
Hi @Nick Steiner, thanks for your answer. Already sent the file to support, but I lost several hands that I was involved in, because the software crashed on me mid-hand. This is beyond frustrating, as you can imagine. So far I was only asked to send the specific times of the hands and more details, but having played several tables, it is really hard to remember all those details.
I hope you can improve some of these things asap, as I would love to play on the site.
What I found is that it is running way smoother on Windows. So maybe don't even offer the Mac version as long as it is this unstable?
See below for cards missing
That's short flop holdem! The flop simply has two cards instead of three. :)
lol. frustrating to say the least
Also, the action so far is very little at the small plo limits. Sometimes just one table running.
I personally dont think anonymous poker is gonna work unless RIOP comes out with absolutely incredible RB program or just cuts the rake in half. Initial rake cap is just way too high to play/enjoy blindfolded poker. We all get some of the reasonings behind it but still anonymous poker is kind of a joke to be honest. Tell me any other sport that does something like this? Nobody does that. If I remember correctly other sites already tried it, players didnt like it and turned out that weaker players lost their stacks even quicker. Weaker/recreational players need their information as well, for example nobody wants to open-sit against best players at certain stakes without knowing it. Just a lack of that little piece of information who`s who just kills the games. End game – makes it way harder to start games (we can already see it on RIOP), site loses traffic, players play on other sites where they can choose who they wanna play against). Please give people some options.
Personally I like the "idea"of anonymous online poker, but I do feel after a while it could be come a little boring/sterile. When playing live, I always look for the table that is not only loose but also full of banter. I am also looking for familiar faces etc. I think many recreational players do the same both live and online.
I love the fact that the site is purposely not supported by any HUD software. In fact, my main site I play at now is exactly the same in that respect but there is also no chat facility which I think is terrible. I love the banter (both good and bad) at the tables and I think (in my opinion) that stripping too much away is like trying to watch a decent sports game with the volume turned down and no crowd interaction. Enjoyable for some, but just not the same for many others.
Have played a few more session now:
- on windows it runs a lot smoother
- it is really annoying that no settings are saved. Every time I open the application I have to redo all settings
- Splash pots are still fun and make up for some other things
Idea:
Make some kind of deal with Doug Polk to play and stream on RIO poker, that would be huge for the site imo. He have huge community who appreciate him a lot, and big part of community are recreational players
He's the face of upswing, RIO training's biggest competitor. Even if they wanted to ask him I highly doubt any deal would make him promote RIO poker (and in effect RIO training). Moreover he lives in the US so would have to relocate to play.
Zoom Poker is the perfect format that doesnt allow predatory behavior. Anonymous poker is a step way too far.
RIO Poker with screen names is a good poker site worth playing on. Without screen names, it is unplayable. It is that simple. You want customers, you need to add screen names, all limits and games.
You have a remarkable ability to convince yourself your opinion is the only one that matters. Stop spamming this thread with the same comment.
If you keep saying something similar overtime you start to believe in it, If you keep reading something similar you start to believe in it too.
Pretty sure I've read it in few psychology books
All facts, all the time, mofo.
Thanks!I’ll try it out. Hopefully, I won’t lose much cash there So far the only good source of casinos, reviews, and other things concerning BTC gambling is this one bitcoin casino free spins. Check it out. You’re going to be surprised by the unknown before websites to gamble.
im a big fan of phil.. but i must say the approach of not making smaller limits on the plo side is kindda of an insult. plus this site is in euro.. , plo is such a wild game with ton variance already.. why in the world would you not have smaller stakes.. if the site claims it has all players in mind and wants ppl to have pokerdream alive. its a snobish approach. 10 euro plo game will requiere big bankroll to play properly 500 euro or more..( not what a small casual or starting player would be eagered to invest right away.. some ppl deposit max 50 to 100 bucks which in euro means less money) being that the site has no insureplay or run twice feature... which is also a stupid idea to have named the site rio... now you can not implement such usefull tool as '''run twice'' feature much used by most plo players including phil. it is NOT a good reason ''site name'' to NOT have that the feature.. specially for plo.. we are in the middle of a pandemic.. what in the world are you waiting for to implement the smaller stakes for plo?? or a ''early cashout or run twince '' feature.. if you are for real about capturing all players not just forumgeeks/ players then you have to snap out of it.. you may deserve to fail if you dont adapt/implement changes. new site shloud make even more efforts for the smaller players.
im sorry guys but i have one question and im new here..if i upgrade my acc from essential to elite today new 30 days start from today ?
Hey SStanisLLav
You're charged $99.99 minus a pro-rated amount you paid for Essential. For example, if you bought Essential and upgraded to Elite on the same day, you'd be charged $75. If it's one day before your subscription ends, it would be nearly the full $99.99.
Let me know if this isn't clear enough.
