Push it to the limit

This is going to be my journal from now on. I've been experiencing some kind of downswing these last 6 months (Monetary, not rly in terms of bbs) . I'll probably post a graph below to give you an general idea. Aside from money, I think I've been doing quite okay. Been playing nl200-nl600 through the year with a bunch of 1k and 2k shots that haven't rly worked out that well (Also tried dropping 200, but that didn't work out too well either). Im -1bb/100 pre rb at highstakes so far. Lately I've become frustrated, I lost like 20k this week (Lots of 1k nl) which made me realising I have to make some changes. First of all I'm going to take mental game coaching, my mental game is kinda meh.. It's neither good or bad. Second of all I'm going to make the ajackson database review. Next step after that is working harder on my game, playing more hours and making more dough. I'll probably post weekly or monthly results here and maybe some random insights on occasion.

My first post after this one will probably be about the mental game coaching, I'm looking forward to it. If you had mental game coaching and want to be contribute, pls do and tell me/us more about it, I'll write something about it as soon as I've had my first session.

My insights so far this month:
- Poker is a very very hard game
- It's hard to know what works and what doesn't work due to variance and sample size.
- Variance can be very cruel sometimes.

First graph is the month so far, second is the year so far. Take care

Why don`t u post the graph in $ ?

sweet16 9 years, 7 months ago

Because that brings a lot of negative emotions to me, I guess only losers like me say this but variance is a bitch and 200k hands is litterally nothing. My yearly results is positive but very bad (in terms of dollars), and way below expectations in terms of hourly etc that's all I feel like revealing for now.

Thanks for the good luck wishes guys!

I didn't indend to make a update before the mental game coaching, but I'll anyways. I also didn't plan to play more poker in the next upcoming days, but I did that anyways as well. There was some juicy 1k tables which seemed like fun. I played rly well and managed to win a bunch of small pots here and there. But in the first big pot for the session (semi deep at nl1k) vs a reg I made a rly bad assumption which turned out to be very off. And that kept going, I made some rly bad decisions in all the big pots which cost me a lot. My decisions got worse and worse, I recognized this and called it a session. So stuck like 3k more for the month. Did quite well at 400 & 600 but that didn't help me enough. I could post a session graph I guess, but I think I'll try to avoid doing it, because it's just short term results and that doesn't really matter. A week is still short term relatively speaking, but I think that's the smallest sample I'll show.. Unless I go on some massive heater.. Or the opposite!

Aside from that since I haven't been playing I've had a lot of free time, which I put into crev, making some ranges in equilab and watching some videos. I think I had a semi break-through today which is really interesting to me. I'll try to apply it in my upcoming crev simulations and we'll see what that brings me. I'm probably going to work a lot on my game the upcoming days, I got some pretty clear goals what I want to achieve for now. Grinding theory and putting in hours in the lab seems more interesting to for now. So no more playing poker for a while.

Insights:
- Having break throughs can be very satisfying & also necessary. Poker stops being fun when you get stuck doing the same mistakes over and over without figuring it what you should do instead
- Poker is very boring when you are losing
- It's incredible how much free time & energy I get even for a day when I decide not to play poker.
- I'm going to filter out nl2k for now, I'm simply just not good enough or got the bankroll required to play it.

Yours Sincerely, S16

So I took 2-3 days off from playing poker. Have been working very hard on my game instead (maybe like 4-5 hours a day I think) I found some new cool things to work on which is always interesting. We'll see how it turns out. My feeling tells me that I really is starting to understand some spots which I didn't understand prior to this week .I think the results will come, but once again.. I don't know. Mainly working through the alan jackson database review which is awesome, would recommend that for sure. He's work is just perfect imo, he spends a lot a time and you will be able to tell that once you see his analysis. Really dedicated guy, props to him! You can find him on 2+2 if you are interested in doing the analysis.

Did my mental game session, it was rly cool. It helped me a lot, I think pretty much everyone can use it no matter who you are and / or your relation to poker is. Would recommend it for sure, same thing there, realised some major things but also just made me more focused in general.

Poker wise it's still not going so well, I've denied it for too long but wow I've ran insanely bad this year. According to Alans database review I was "missing" 23 bi from ai pf with AK and QQ+.. also doing terrible when flatting 4b with same hands ^^ .. I've lost like 6-7 bi more with the same range since the review as well.. What you gonna do, ai pf with nut part of my range doesn't rly matter tbh it's obv +ev plays and nothing I can do about it. My 5b bluffs did terrible as well, which seems to be the way the year is going, when I bluff I run into something good and doesn't manage to suck out.. Alan also looked through my database and said that my 25k~ downswing looked all good, not anything radical in terms of tilt / spew or w/e.. It was just same old and due to variance I was losing (mostly ofc).

I'll try and do a new update like every weekend or every 5 days I think, thinking about maybe including some hand histories next time if people would like to see it & give input?

Yours sincerely, sweet16!

That database review sounds like a good deal.

Besides working with Alan, how have you worked on your game exactly? Do you have some sort of routine(s) to improve your game? I'm asking because everyone says that you have to work hard on your game, but nobody really goes in detail.

sweet16 9 years, 7 months ago

Yeah it really is!

That's the thing you have to figure out. The hardest part of working at your game isn't to get hours in etc. It is to find something that improves your game a lot comparing the time you put in. You can work on really trivial parts of your game (typically spots that never come up, or knowledge you cant apply in other spots). No one will tell you this, you have to figure out this on your own. And since it's rly hard to figure out, you wont tell people for free.... I've been taking coaching and surrounding myself with good players etc to make these things a little bit easier (aside from working a ton in crev, pt4, equilab etc). And it's still quite hard, but I like the challenge most of the times.

I made an forum post about a hand history if anyone feels like talking strategy/different lines! I think using the forum-format is easier than putting it here and on weaktight or w/e.. So here's the link! http://www.runitonce.com/nlhe/510-bluff-in-3b-pot/

I got the alan jackson coaching 6 months ago, spent a ton of time on it. It only improved my win rate by 1bb/100. I will say that the database review is very good, but I don't give alot of weight to Alan's individual analysis of my game. I've found the most useful thing about it just comparing my game to toher winners and then drilling away at those spots. I can go into more detail if you'd like, but I think Alan doesn't have enough experience with statistics and gets fooled too easily by variance. He is also a little bit causation biased, and is always "behind the curve" as far as what his poker opinions are (since his methodology is simply just to copy what is working).

Hey you have to excuse me for my late answer. I didn't see this post untill now. I do think it's rly unfair to say how much you gained in win rate from the database (no matter results unless it changed drastically) because 6 months is still not such a big sample unless you play like 100k hands/month. You can run bad (or good) for so long, either way I think you should be proud that you improved your winrate with 1bb/100 during the last 6 months. Since the games tends to get tougher for everyday that pass by. Many regs (i.e me for example got winrates that's constantly dropping)

So I'm going to do a quick update about my results, I got a new computer and lost some hands in between.
My results for the past two months are as following:

August: -14k and 0bb/100 .. Being a b/e player is rly expensive these days huh.
September: Not sure due to the missing hand histories, but i made like 5.5k on wcoops i think and like another 4-6k on cashgame. Had a extremely good month going for a while there but ended up losing 5k the last week.

I've been playing too much poker and not working enough off-table which seems to have made some marks. I've not been very honest to myself, my game is not good at all. I need to do some serious work if I want to get close to achieve what I'm aiming for in poker. I feel like I just keep making silly mistakes all the time (Some due to variance, some due to me thinking in a weird/bad way due to past variance).

I feel like I get stuck often with working on my game, if there are any midstakes players out there who run some kind of study group or we.. (Or want to have study buddy or anything similair hit me up)
