Playing drunk at the high stakes

I sometimes rail the high stakes games on one of my poker sites to work through reg's ranges and try to figure out their games. There is one regular who sits from $5/$10 up to $25/$50. I would think of him as a strong regular as you have to be good if you have enough bankroll to sit these stakes right?

Then, one day I see him playing 2 tables $25/$50 heads up vs a good LAG and he played very poorly. I saw him 4bet, 7 high as a bluff and barrel off deep with no equity. He barreled off with no equity many times. He lost many buy ins and then told his opponent in chat that he needed to "get another drink" but would be back.

He came back and then lost some more. This doesn't make any sense to me!

I guess the question is why are people using substances while playing poker at the same time? I've always thought that playing poker while drunk is equivalent to drunk driving, something you should never do or even think about doing!

Why is it that some of the best regs on my site are playing drunk? This can't be plus EV! :-/
