New functionality suggestion writing a comment

I wrote this as a comment to a hand but I am not sure it did get any attention.

I think it is going to be really helpful to have a functionality that indicates when someone is writing a post (like in skype), so everybody else who is interested in response too can see it and maybe wait a couple of minutes to see the actual post of the other member. Pretty often I write something and post it and after I refresh the page I realise that someone else got first here and his response includes big part of what I am writing at the moment. Just a suggestion that I think is going to be appreciated.

Also maybe divide the forum in pages like it is on 2+2 instead of scrolling down to the bottom and clicking the view more threads button?

Clownfish, although a good idea. It is very unlikely to happen, based on a developer standpoint they would need to change the comment box to a flash based script or maybe even java. Which would cost money and time and may not be all that effective in the long run since I have yet to see a forum use it. But still great idea no less :)

Like Sean said - great idea, but a nightmare to code, and it would likely slow down the site significantly. The latter point is one I've had to get used to. There's a lot of stuff that we want to add, but the server drag (even with a ton of horsepower) is just too high. Really creative idea though, thanks for sharing!

One thing we may add in the future is dynamic updating. With that in place you wouldn't see that there was someone typing, but you'd see their post automatically update in the thread the second they post it. That's on my dream list at this point. :)

would be tho very good to have a note if there is new comments where u were writing previously, so you can check back and answer or see more discussion, this way its lil bit confusing specially to someone like me writing umm...everywhere

I agree with this, just a sign to say there has been an update to an area that you have left a comment. Otherwise in order to keep up with what people have posted you would have to check every single post daily and it grows exponentially each day lol.

yeah some way to easily track or follow discussions would be great and i think it would make the forums more active.

right now it is too much work - ie i comment on some discussion and the only way i know if there is a response to go back and look at every thread i comment in and this takes too much time

Hi Mike,

Right now the thread is red if there's new content in it and gray if you've read all of it. V soon there will be a callout showing that you've posted in the thread. In addition, your feed is going to show when a thread you've commented in has a new post, so you'll be able to track things there.

I am having problems with editing comments, often after I have finished editing a comment and i click on "Post" nothing happens. I have to refresh the page and then copy-paste for it to work. I'm using the newest Safari version on a mac (Mac OS X 10.8.2).

Just figured it would be easier to post it in a thread that deals with comments rather than create a new one for just a minor bug.

@Sebastian- Weird... I just tested it with Safari and I was able to post the edited comment with no problems... can you shoot me an email at dan@runitonce.com if you're still having trouble?
