Just another PLO Journal

Sup guys,

My name is Mike and I'm from the US//California. I moved to Taiwan a year after Black Friday to continue my dream of becoming a professional poker player. I used to be a pure SNG grinder and I've come to realize it's very hard to pursue this path while living in an Asia timezone, as I would have to be completely nocturnal to put up decent volume. ( and as we all know, volume is very important for SNGs grinders, or just poker in general) So this year, after signing up on RIO and studied multiple videos and PLO books, I've decided to give it a shot starting at the micro stakes of PLO zoom and climb my way up and see if I can succeed as a cash pro. I've never grind cash professionally before in my poker career so this will be a big transition for me.

Even after reading how bad the rakes are in low stake plo zoom I still think it will be a good place for me to learn and acquire experiences that I need with plo + the fast pace of 4 tabling zoom suits me since I use to grind 25-35 tables of sngs.

The reason I'm starting a journal is just to record my progression and revolve myself around positive and successful Poker Minds on RIO. I believe it will help me get through the hurdles that I will undoubtedly face in the path of my plo career.

I will be adopting to a more aggressive bankroll management and moving up in stakes whenever I win 10bi of the next stake and dropping down when losing the 10bi.

I.E. Plo5 + 100$ profit --> move to Plo10 +250$ profit ----> move to plo25 and moving down when losing the 10bi shots until I win 10bi from the previous stake again.

Short term goal:
- Grind min of 4000 hands daily.
- reaching platinum star on a monthly bases to maintain at least a 25% rb to cover monthly expenses.
- moving up to plo25 zoom while maintaining a positive ev pre rb.
- somehow get enough likes to receive an elite month membership so I can watch all of phil's plo videos.

Mid term goal:
- Grind min of 4000 hands daily.
- achieving supernova by 6 months period for more rb.
- moving up to plo50 zoom while maintaining a positive ev pre rb.
- somehow get enough likes to receive an elite month membership so I can watch all of phil's plo videos.

Long term goal:
- Grind min of 4000 hands daily.
-achieve supernova +200k vpps.
-moving up to plo100//200 zoom while maintaining a positive ev winner pre rb.
-achieving financial stability through poker.
-making enough to afford Elite videos and watch all of Phil's omaha videos.

Thanks for reading and I can take constructive criticism so feel free to leave any suggestions or comments.

TL:DR sng grinder decides to move to plo zoom starting at plo 5.

Thanks Aleks, I've ready both post already and I understand it will be a rough road ahead. However I don't think I can jump straight into Plo100 or Plo200 where the rake is less of a factor.

thanks so much, again I'm not ignorant enough to not see how hard it will be, I will probably eventually start playing some non zoom plo over various sites once I've learned enough from plo zoom. I would imagine if one can beat zoom, he will probably be able to do ok in regular plo table of the same level.

Plo 5 zoom went pretty well, player pool wasn't as tough as I'd imagined it to be. ( or maybe I'm just running well)

Anyways, will be moving on to Plo 10 zoom and hopefully my good run will continue. And if I lose 5-7bi or so in Plo 10 I'll be moving back to Plo 5.

GL...maybe see you at the tables, as I'm trying to do the same myself (with less volume and a slightly less aggressive BR management).
PLO10 seems very beatable even with the killer rake :-)

thanks man, yeah it does seem beatable even with my skill level but I can feel the difference between the 5 and the 10 for sure. Def trying to plug my leaks at these lower levels before moving onto the plo 25//50.

A quick update after about 25k hands of PLO 10 zoom. I guess the first thing I noticed is that there are significantly fewer fishes at this level compare to the PLO 5, I guess most semi serious micro stake reg that are transitioning from other format to PLO often starts at this level. ( myself included ) Also I notice a lot of spots where I've been quite spewey and are making too many mistakes for me to be moving onto PLO 25 zoom so I will probably stay at this level for another 25k hands and see how it goes before I decide to move up to PLO 25 zoom. I guess I can't really complain running 100$ above ev =)

As far as the achieving the other short term goals go. I've been 4000+ hands per day and am on pace for platinum star for the month so am looking forward to more rakeback next month once I achieve that.

Update for January.
Accomplished few short term goals including achieving Platinum Star and moving up to 25$ plo zoom.

So After my previous post, I put in another 10k or so hands in the plo10 zoom and the results were not great, for so reason I felt that it was because the opponents were thinking at a lower level than the videos I've been watching on RIO and therefore my play against them were not optimal//effective. So I did something that's against my bankroll management rule and decided to move up to PLO25 zoom and just play two tables. As you can see, the results has been decent so far but the sample size is far from enough to justify the winrate.

Now onto the goals I didn't achieve, I was NOT able to grind 4000 hands/day after having consecutive bad days in Plo10 zoom so I move onto the PLO25 zoom playing just two tables. The results were great but 2 tabling I was only able to get in about 1500-2500 hands per day. So hopefully this month I can stay a winner at this level and able to increase my table to 3 and then 4 hopefully.

Looking forward to collectiving more from RB this month and hopefully I can have a great month which allows me to move up to plo50 zoom.

Regarding the level of thinking of your villains I strongly feel that being able to quickly determine your opponents level of thinking and adjust accordingly is probably the single most vital skill of a good micro grinder.
Since most ppl don't think too far ahead you can simply play very exploitive against them and not worry much about being balanced.
I'm not saying move down to plo10 again but avoiding to learn to exploit a low level thinking villain is not going to do you much good in the long run.
