For my experience, it all comes down to surrender and self improvement.
Surrender due the fact that we are humans beings with emotions and there will be always something in the journey that we struggle with and the main thing we can work on is to just self improve day by day doing the things that can accelerate our growth without the illusion that we can be perfect or untouchable.

Self-awareness; understanding the root of what you're manifesting on the tables (which is usually fear) and then dissolving your attachments and aversions

For me it was being honest about my in-game motives--fear of being weak, fear of loss, etc and finding those same patterns in my history, not just as a poker player, but as a human. I can tie those fears back to experiences and see how they've manifested in many of my decisions. For instance, I can be and have been very righteous and combative because for so long I held onto this belief that not standing up to opposition is weak. But that's not necessarily true and in poker it can lead to taking a stand in a bad spot. But being aware of myself and re-framing my perception has allowed me to upgrade my software

honesty and acceptance.

I had some discussion on Skype about acceptance a couple of months ago and learned that acceptance can have many different meanings. Both context and your background seems to matter.

The type of acceptance I had in mind is what Friedrich Nietzsche calls Amor fati and the kind of acceptance talked about in Christian and Stoic philosophy.

Serenity prayer
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

Discipline
Harmony
Patience
Strength
Preparation
Surrender
Self Improvement
Self Compassion
Honesty
Acceptance

I would say yes, all of those help, but I think the most important -- the root of it comes down to love. Loving the light and dark, in ourselves, in the game, in our opponents, in the poker community.

What would poker feel like if you loved the downswing equal to the upswing?

it'll be boring for me, upswing is something nice and great thing which can happen in your life. and downswing complete opposite (dark time) and it helps to realize we live in real world, bad stuff happens all the time, no one protected from it. Sometimes things go not the way you like(want), and it is something that can give you a lesson

Establishing self-discipline. Discipline is similar to a muscle that should be trained each day in order to strengthen and be healthy. It can be a difficult trait to establish and also maintain, but those who do are the ones who become successful in one way or another.

I'll also add that it's a game for the long-run, not the short, if you choose to take it seriously. It's easy to get caught up in the short-term wins or losses but keeping your focus throughout the journey is key.

Real strength comes from your heart, not your mind. When you have a strong purpose to stay, you won’t ever give up. If someone is passionate about their work, it will show in the results they produce.

Yes! Well said.

The mind has no power without the heart. If emotions are not engaged in what you do and what you want, you can't create anything. Divide and conquer is an old, low quality social pattern. Integration of mind and heart massively improves performance, and you feel better too.
