From Mental Fish to a Disciplined Domination Station

Here is to a new life and a new
beginning in 2014 and beyond!!!

So a little
bit about myself and my reasons for this thread.  I’m a 29 year who lives in Tennessee (about 6
hours from Tunica MS)…  I have been
playing poker for about 7 years off and on and just recently came back from a 3
year break about 6 months ago.  I play on
Bovada due to being in America and it being the only place I know you can get
your money without any issues…

I have had a
fair amount of success in the past 6 months playing without any BR management or
true understanding for what it takes to have LONG TERM SUCCESS at poker.  But the truth is my success isn’t long lived
bc I always jump up in stakes and chase my losses and one may(always does) cost
me my whole BR.  This is a long journey
and I need to get on it now so I can hopefully continue to grow and be ready to
dominate when online poker comes back to the US again.  I want to print money one day too.(Part of my
problem here)  Want it too fast!!!

About a
month ago I was up to 4k and cashed out 2k and then rolled it back up to 3k
before tilting it all off at 2kNL and pulling up with 300 left.  Ive done this many times as mentioned above.   If I don’t tilt the way I have I would be up approx.
25k over the past 6 months.  Instead I am
up around 4k.  L
Tough thing to see on PT trust me when I say that.  I know Im a winner anywhere from 25NL up to
100NL.  I play plenty good enough and
beat these games pretty good.  I need to
get this under control ASAP if I have any plans on continuing this journey and
having any success.  My problem is I have
had major issues quantifying what success is to me in this crazy game.  I mean the ultimate goal is to make money and
I do that on the regular.   Just so
happens though that I am like most players who want to move up too fast.  Watching Lucas Greenwood’s video on, “Finding
Success at Poker” really has given me a new outlook on this whole what is
success thing.  It seems so obvious but I
really struggle losing 3 or 4 BI after it seems to take so long to earn those
few BI.  Anyone who has advice on ways to
just get it through your head that its part of the game to lose, I’d be glad to
hear it.  I do plan on hiring a coach
very soon because I somewhat feel I am getting stuck in my learning curve.  I am learning on my own just by watching
videos on RIO and posting hands and such but I do also know that my learning
has slowed down tremendously.  This may
be due to my extreme desire to just make money or it could be due to the fact that
I have started to plateau in my learning curve because I don’t know what to
learn next.  I know playing more hands
helps you learn but I also firmly believe that getting help at this point will
be a huge +EV decision.

I am very
excited to start this journey with a couple of friends who need some credit in
my poker turn around.  They are… In No
specific order…  Scouurge, Eton, and my
favorite RIO pro Lucas Greenwood.  I hope
to get some coaching from Luke this year as well as some mental guidance from
Scouurge and grinding my way to financial freedom one day at a time.

Well, I’ve
spelled out my Goals, Challenges, and my BRM guide for 2014 in the next few
paragraphs and lists.  One great thing is
I play on Bovada and the games are super fishy howeveryou can only play 4
tables max when playing cash so it really hurts my volume.  Another thing that sucks is their VIP program
is basically nonexistent and there is no RB on Bovada either.   I plan
on playing a few MTTS but nothing to major.
I also play a 1/3 game that plays more like a 5/10 game with a bunch of HORRIBLE
players.  Raise it to 30 pre and get 4
callers in a 9 handed game.  BRUTAL
sometimes when those guys are having the deck smack them in the face.  Anyway, wish me luck and feel free to contact
me by email, skype, RIO, and 2+2.  I do
also plan on posting on here a min of 5 times per week so I can keep people
updated and cheering me on hopefully.

Trying to follow
somewhat of Chris Ferguson’s BR Guide

Bankroll Management

1) Starting BR= $500

2) Starting Limit = 25NL-6max

3) Stop Loss = 3-BI’s and I must quit to
help me keep from tilting and losing the money I have made by playing solid.

4) Must play 10k hands + have the BR
requirements to move up in limits and then evaluate my win rate (BB/100) and be
honest with myself on moving up by using the formula I made up…   Also remember that when you move up in
limits you game select and continue to mix in your old limits

(Volume + Win Rate + BR = Move Up or
NOT)

5) 20BI to move up to next level.  If I lose 5 BI at this next level then move
back down.

(15 BI at 100NL = 30BI at 50NL)

6) Taking small shots weekly at some
MTTS…  The nightly 8k guarantee for $10+1
is a good one to play because if you bink it then you just made about $2,000
for your troubles.

7) When playing MTTS do not play a
tournament that has a BI greater than 2% of my BR…

8) Never have more than 10% of my BR on
any table.  If this happens quit when the
blinds get to me.

9) FOLLOW THESE RULES STRICTLY

Schedule/Focus

*Play 6
days/week at an average of 2.75 hours a day played minimum.  Playing 4-tables I can get 250 hands an
hour.  That means I should be able to get
in 3k-5k hands per week.

*Do a pre-session quick “regroup” of
my thoughts and listen to some music while I read over some notes I have of
starting hand req. and some sayings I have.

*Do a post-session review of how I did
on my main focus for that session I came up with during my pre-session
“regroup”.

*1 Day  off I will not do anything poker wise except
maybe watch a video on something I feel may be a leak in my game and takes
vigorous notes.  MUST TAKE 2 FULL DAYS OFF
PER 2-WEEKS MIN.

*Use that 1 day off per week to review
PT and do some HH reviews to check my lines and stats.*

*Get a study/sweat group
together!!!  (About 4-8 guys in limits
from 25nl-400nl) Evaluate every 2-weeks with my coach or my study group

Use my time more wisely!!!  Less trolling poker videos and more focus on
my game or playing…

Read the Mental Game of Poker
Daily…  Reread the Mental Game of Poker…
And reread

Focus on the process of being a
winning player.  Keep my mind fresh at
all times while at the tables.  (THIS SHIT
IS REAL!!!)

Goals/Ambitions

Use a DISCIPLINED GRIND
APPROACH!!!  Understand that “Time and
Patience are Called For, Many Suprises Await You”

Play 200k Hands this year(Going to be
very hard    4k hands X 52weeks = 208k
hands in 2014!!!

Have a winrate of 5BB/100 hands.  My money goal is 15k profit for 2014!!!  Basically if I make 1k per month online (Supplement
my Child Support).  I would be very happy
and feel I succeeded this year if I hit my 1k goal per month around 75% of the
time but come on we have to make big long term goals and smaller short term
goals…  Right?  I know this will be brutally tough seeing as
how I only have a home game her where I live 2 days a week(It’s awesome
however)   I feel this is possible with
my online games and some MTTS mixed in and the super soft live game I will be
playing in as soon as my BR can handle it.

Take a vacation from work and go
somewhere on a poker trip.  Not sure
where to yet but Vegas for the WSOP sounds fun in 2015!!!  (Basically looking to 2015 probably)

Take my studying of the game to a
whole new level.  I want to use “The
Adult Learning Model” to progress the correct way in the game and am looking
forward to treating this game with the respect it deserves…  Coach is greatly needed for this I feel.

Exercise my mind more.  Whether it’s poker related or just working on
my discipline.  Discipline seems like the
way to go seeing as how my tilt issues still plague me to this day.  When I feel I am getting this more under
control then the poker strategy will be even more +EV because I won’t be
tilting off my BR.

Thanks everyone and I look forward to
your advice and comments to help me grind through to a new found enjoyment in life.  POKER!!!

Couple of things.. You gotta play at least 35-40k hands/month if you wanna be a pro. Also 15k goal for a year... a bit too low in my opinion. I mean you can make 2k/month at 5c/10c plo if you grind 6 hrs a day - 6 tables. As for the desire of making money fast and taking shots that will likely hurt you if they go wrong I can totally relate. Don't know if there's a cure. :) GL

Well first night I played after really trying to focus I played 2 sessions and lost 5 BI and tilted and jumped up and played 100nl.  Lost 2 more BI there a and pulled up with my last $175. So last night I decided to play some live at a 100nl at one of the local home games.  Such a easy game playing live.  They are so bad.  Cashed out $355 and played very well.  I do have  hand im going to post later and get some feedback. Basically I'm super disappointed in my online game.  I want to make money so fast but it doesn't work  like that I'm learning.  Learning the degenerate way is the bad part.  I guess just keep crushing live and work on my online tilt issues while I'm at it.

You have to rethink your view on poker and realistic expectations (without underselling yourself) to your future winnings... the swings you are experiencing by chasing loses at higher limits are not only detrimental to your bottom line but also your view of poker and longevity as well .. psychologically you may be sabotaging your poker career... at least that's what happened to me

If I could do it all again I would have just tried to get in a million hands as fast as possible and taken it from there... busting rolls costs a poker player an exponential amount of money
