From Delta Boötis to Gamma Crateris *Part 2* | CheckRais3r 2019 Poker Journal

Hi everyone. This is a continuation of my previous poker journal

As you guys might know, I'm an Elite Pro on RIO. My main game is 500ZHUNL on PokerStars although I play up to 2KNL if there's good action running. I started 2019 moving to Andorra and been loving it here so far.

The idea of this journal is to post daily updates about my day regarding poker and life. I still only check my graph once a month (very recommended practice btw) so the posts are going to consist on explaining my feeling at the tables, my game quality and my study routine as well as some interesting hands from time to time. As far as volume is concern, I'm still aiming for 25k/hands month which I think it's a very good amount given that I spend at least 2 hours a day studying.

This year results:

All stakes on $

500NL

1KNL

Stake breakdown

Thanks everyone for reading and good luck!

25/7/2019 UPDATE

Study time: 2 hours

Hands: 992

Game quality: B+/A

Hey guys!

Today I woke up early, went to the swimming pool and then started my session. Action was dead for a while but then I got to regbattle at 500NL and I was pretty focused while playing. I played a couple other short sessions a little bit later and then had a study session with 2 friends reviewing hands which was good too.

I’m feeling really happy with my game. I’m quite surprised that I didn’t feel rusty at all after vacation too.

More tomorrow as well as some interesting hands. Good luck!

26/7/2019 UPDATE

Study time: 2.5 hours

Hands: 536

Game quality: B+/A

Hey guys.

Today I had a good day. I didn't get to play a lot even though I was opensitting the lobby for some time. Started with a 1KNL pool in which I did quite well and then had a great study session. Ended the day playing a short session on a 500NL pool and my game was pretty good despite being quite tired.

Hands as promised!

Getting hero'ed

Heroing

Nasty river spot

Hooooold

More tomorrow. Thanks for reading and good luck!

27/7/2019 UPDATE

Study time: 1 hour

Hands: 1266

Game quality: B

Hey guys.

Today I played my first session before going to the swimming pool and I felt way less focused while playing which proves once again how important is for me to follow my routine. I played a bunch of sessions mostly against recs and did quite well.

More tomorrow, good luck!

28/7/2019 UPDATE

Hands: 990

Game quality: B, A-

Hey guys.

Today I put good volume once again. At some points I wasn't playing my best due to having too many tables and feeling a bit distracted. Other than that, I’m overall quite happy with my performance lately.

Waking up early tomorrow morning and starting the week strong! Good luck all.

29/7/2019 UPDATE

Study time: 2 hours

Hands: 689

Game quality: B

Hey guys.

Today I had a very busy day. Woke up quite early, went to the swimming pool as always and after warming up I started with my first session of the day pretty focused. I unfortunately got distracted after the first 30 minutes so I decided to stop at around the 1 hour mark. Then I cooked and had lunch and after that I had a great study session in which I refreshed a few concepts. After that I did a coaching session with a new student that was very nice as well.

Tomorrow I’ll be quite busy since I have to do a couple non poker related things and I also have another coaching session scheduled but I’ll try to play some hands if possible. Good luck!

30/7/2019 UPDATE

Study time: 2 hours

Hands: 194

Game quality: A

Hey guys.

Today I had another very busy day. Had some good study, then I did a coaching session and finally recorded a live play video for RIO and that was all the poker I played today. I'm really tired since I worked quite a lot even though it wasn't at the poker tables.

More tomorrow as well as the end of month recap! Good luck all.

Game quality: A+, B+

Hey guys.

Today I woke up early, went to the swimming pool and then played a session in which I ended really happy both with my strategic decisions and with my performance regarding mental game. Then had a study session and finally played a short one pretty unfocused for the most part.

Monthly recap coming next.

Hey guys. This was a good month even though I didn't play much at all because I spent two whole weeks back home. I'm really happy with my game and the new routine that I have seems to be helping a lot too. I'm super motivated to keep studying and crushing the games. Let's go!

Good luck folks, thanks for reading!

1/8/2019 UPDATE

Study time: 2 hours

Hands: 1323

Game quality: B

Hey guys.

Today study was awesome. We learned a few new things and I realized how much my thought process during hands has changed lately. I’m way more comfortable in many spots at this point and can’t wait to keep improving more and more. My game at the tables was good but not great. I couldn’t concentrate much at all and this is something that I really want to improve as well.

More tomorrow. Good luck!

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 7 months ago

Hey guys sorry for the lack of updates last few days. I've been basically playing way more hands than I should have (specially today) and my game has been pretty mediocre because of that even though the results have been pretty good for the most part I believe. Probably taking a day off the tables to regain confidence and hit the lab.

Good luck all.

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 7 months ago

Sorry for the lack of updates. Haven’t been motivated to post given that I believe there’s not much interest on this anymore. I’d probably stop posting or maybe post monthly updates from now on.

Good luck folks!

TJSuited 5 years, 7 months ago

Maybe turn it into a weekly thing? Monthly is fine too. I personally love the ones where you put interesting hands in the post even if that was everyday

Bingo 123 5 years, 7 months ago

Wheee there they are!

55 , love it
89s, gotta have heart
65s. I mean we unblock all zhe things, btm of our range
AQo, YEASSS got em! caught in the cookie jar!!
KQo, ^^
K2s, wow what a spot, the double check into x/ripp... streetpoker it is!!
T9o, we block QT, we block strong Ax, we block flushes I like it

Haha these made my day man, Bravo!

zache86 5 years, 7 months ago

Thin value - nice one
Gotcha - yeah
#streetpoker - haha awesome hand !!
Almost disrespectful river snap call - looool insane

haha nice to have those hh's again man

Bingo 123 5 years, 7 months ago

Haha cool I hope you do, just don't feel like its a pressure to show up with the crazy plays or anything here although I am sure they come around ^^

yeah it's really inspiring to follow your blog and the HH's make it very cool as well. I view HU to be the toughest game to master and be good at, its more tough strategically and mentally because of the swings. Like FR and 6max you can sorta get by with playing reasonably tight/straight forward but HU its constant action and you gotta bring the toughness each hand. I'm not playing much of it but I hope in future I can play more of it successfully

Keep it up man, inspiring and motivating stuff to me and I'm sure others as well!

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 7 months ago

Thanks for the kind words mate!

Yeah in HU your’e usually also not able to put very long sessions because there’s action in every single hand and if you’re really focused, you end up completely exhausted after the session. It’s still the most fun form of poker in my opinion though hehe.

Weekly update

Hey lads!

This was a great week. I'm extremely happy with my game lately. Been putting a lot of work every day and I feel like I keep improving day by day. Volume has been good as well, I'm playing around 1000 hands a day which is great volume given that I do 2h / 2.5h study sessions with a few friends every weekday.

Some hands as you guys like :P

Ambitious

Interesting river shove

Full house is good

Got caught

Got caught again (this one is bad on my part)

Cooler

Gotcha!

Next Friday I'm leaving back home for a couple weeks. The plan is to spend a few days with the girlfriend on Portugal, we going to visit Lisbon and probably Porto as well so I'm pretty excited for that.

Goals for this week:

  • Maintain a good work / sleep schedule

  • Meditate once a day

  • Record two awesome videos for RIO

That's it guys. Hope you all have a great week, thanks for reading and good luck!

TJSuited 5 years, 7 months ago

Enjoy the vacation and time with the gf! On that last hand, was this a villain specific read or is this a standard check call there?

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 7 months ago

Thanks mate!

It’s a PIO approved play. QJ is basically the top of my bluff catching range on the river. Unblock missed flush and straight draws, block KJ, AJ, Q4s, QTs and QTo combos.

zache86 5 years, 7 months ago

Feliz navidad muchachos :)

Bingo 123 5 years, 7 months ago

haha i'm from the Netherlands Nuno
My Spanish is limited to lyrics from popular songs I'm afraid this is about what I have xD

zache86 5 years, 7 months ago

Lovely country! I've been there just one time but im planning on going back to visit some of the least known cities

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 7 months ago

Hey boys!

I’m traveling back home for a couple weeks as I already told you. The plan is to enjoy some time with my girlfriend and family and keep studying poker on a daily basis as well as organizing everything I learned the past two months.

Last week was pretty productive. I did a lot of study, recorded two RIO videos and played some hands as well. Forgot to post the monthly graph but I’ll do that when I’m back on Andorra. I’m pretty happy with my game overall but I really feel like I should try to become more organized because that will help me to perform at a higher level at the tables. Will keep you guys updated from time to time and I might post a few pics from my trip to Lisbon!

Good luck everyone and thanks for reading!

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 6 months ago

Hey lads!

Wanted to make a brief update about the past couple of weeks.

I’ve been basically spending a lot of time with my girlfriend and some poker friends, relaxing and enjoying my time back home. This upcoming week we’re going to Portugal, starting on Porto and then visiting Lisbon as well. I’m really excited about that :)

On a side note I’ve been doing some poker study on my own and I’m really happy since I feel like I’m playing very well in the most common postflop situations. I’m also excited to be back on the grind soon and I’m gonna work super hard and be very disciplined to try to reach the highest stakes while my love for the game is still there.

That’s all boys, thanks for reading and good luck!

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 6 months ago

Hi guys!

I’m finally back from my Portugal trip. It was awesome, clearly surpassed my expectations and my girlfriend’s. We had a very good time on both cities but we liked Porto a little better than Lisbon.

Some pics from the trip:

That’s all. Tomorrow I’m traveling back to Andorra and ready to get back on the grind and crush the tables. Let’s go!

Good luck all and thanks for reading :)

Jeff_ 5 years, 6 months ago

Yep, that's what we all need. No graphs, deep hands discussion. Simple enjoying/traveling pictures is what gearing motivation to play(grind/study)

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey guys!

I’ve been thinking on renting an office for some time in order to be more productive and I finally decided to give it a try. At this point of my career, I realized the main two things that are holding me back from reaching the higher stakes are discipline and mental game. I’m not saying that I have no other leaks but I believe my knowledge of the theory is pretty good and I keep improving day by day so if I manage to become more disciplined and better at handling swings I can make it. I’d like to know if you guys had any experiences when it comes to renting a separate place to work but in my case I’d expect it to be very helpful because I find myself sometimes unable to differentiate between my job and my free time and that affects me in such a negative way.

That’s all for now. Will keep you updated, good luck and thanks for reading!

zache86 5 years, 5 months ago

I think it's a great idea...in my case i have a separated room on my appartment so when i go in there it's just for poker stuff (almost for two years now) but it can be difficult if you don't have it and you end up having your pc,tv and livingroom on the same space.

Years ago i used to play live poker so my office was the casino haha

I know some guys from uruguay who used to rent a house (it's not the same but i think it applies), and their experience was great.

Bingo 123 5 years, 5 months ago

Personally never done this but I think it's a great idea as well.
I think it can help to separate things, take the game more serious and help with getting into the grinding , productive zone. Can't hurt to try it for a while, can try to rent for just a month or 2 and see how it go's. I do think it should be somewhat convenient to get there , otherwise you may get tempted to not bother and grind from home anyways

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 5 months ago

Thanks for the comments guys! I absolutely agree with you and I can’t wait to give it a try so from Monday I’ll be looking into it and will post a picture as soon as I have everything set up :)

Today I came back to the tables after a quite long hiatus and I felt pretty good overall. A bit rusty in a few spots but that’s pretty normal. I’m pumped to get back into the study + grind routine and keep doing well.

Tomorrow I have a coaching session scheduled and the plan is to play some cards as well (both poker and Magic :P) Will post a few interesting hands as well. Good luck all and thanks for reading!

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey boys.

Sorry for the lack of updates these last few days. Been grinding quite a lot lately and yesterday I also went to see a few offices. I think I'm gonna rent one tomorrow and move my stuff during the weekend so I can start to work in there from Monday.

Some hands as promised:

Cooler

Bad shape

Bluffcatching

Easy game

Got caught

Cooler

That's all guys. Will post another update as soon as I'm set up on my new office. Good luck all!

Bingo 123 5 years, 5 months ago

Awesome hands love the 76cc hand , love that line , for villain it can be easy to overbluff imo

TJhh hand, what do you think about his bluffcatch ?
And do you think our value range is Kx+ , I guess so right mostly

zache86 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi buddy ! Nice to hear you are going all in with the office

Easy game : interesting flop size

Send some pics when you are settled on the new office

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 5 months ago

Thanks mate! Will definitely post some pics as soon as I’m installed :)

Easy game : interesting flop size

Ha yeah, new tricks have been released by Linus :P

Kalupso 5 years, 5 months ago

Do you play that size as range bet?

It's around the size Pio likes if you cbet entire range on those boards. I used to play that way 3 years ago in HU and a few other regs did too so the idea isn't exactly new. 10% pot is on the lower end of reasonable sizes. I used more like 16% pot on those boards. Strategy is quite close to range check but makes the pot a bit larger when your range has an overall EV advantage but doesn't want to weaken checking range because you don't have nut advantage or even have nut disadvantage but higher EV overall.

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 5 months ago

Yeah exactly. I do play that it as a range bet indeed. It's quite interesting because you go from a range check to range bet without losing any EV in the process by using this size.

Thought it was a new idea because Stars regs started implementing it a couple months ago since Linus did it.

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey guys.

Today I signed the contract of my new office! On Sunday I’m moving my PC, desk and chair and from Monday or Tuesday I’ll be working from there, pretty excited about that to be honest :)

Pictures coming as soon as I have everything set up. Good luck!

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 5 months ago

FIRST DAY AT THE OFFICE

Hey guys!

Today I started at my new office and it was great. I felt much more concentrated while playing most of the time and it also helped me to be more productive and put a decent study session by myself. I’m very happy about it and quite motivated to keep working :)

Mandatory picture

That’s all guys, back tomorrow. Good luck all!

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey guys.

Just finished my last session and I’m waiting for the bus while I write this. Just wanted to share my feelings at the office these last few days.

Being there makes me feel really productive and I think it’s helping me a lot in order to maintain concentration while playing. Tuesday and Wednesday were really good days, felt very well and played quite well for the most part. Today was similar but I made the mistake of playing a bit too much which I should’ve avoided. There was an unreal 1KNL pool running so i forced myself a little bit in order to play there. I don’t regret that decision but I just wanted to post it here in order to have it on mind for the next time.

That’s all. Overall I’m really happy with my new routine and just need to keep improving on a few aspects to make it even better. Thanks for reading and good luck folks!

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey guys.

Today was a great day. First of all I had a swim like every morning and then started my day at the office by reviewing some hands that I played yesterday. After that, I had a great session. Was quite focused and came up with some good plays and a few good explos as well.

After having lunch I prepared and recorded a RIO video and I felt like it was one of, if not the best video I’ve ever made. It was a hand history review which is the format in which I think I’m able to give away most concepts. After recording it I realized how much I enjoy producing content. It’s one of my favorite things to do and I absolutely love to see people enjoying what I do and learning from it.

That’s all, I just wanted to share my day with you. Hope you all had a good one as well, thanks for reading and good luck!

zache86 5 years, 5 months ago

Great!
Of course we enjoy your content a lot...it was a shame you weren't an elite coach since the first day.
How's volume going buddy?

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 5 months ago

Thanks a lot for the kind words mate!

Pretty good. I’m at the 14k hands mark this month which is pretty good given that I was quite busy at the start of October. Let’s see if I can get to 20k til the end of it!

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 4 months ago

Hey guys.

Had to come back home for a few days and forgot to post the monthly graph. I basically broke even. Everything I won at 500NL evaporated at 1KNL while taking some shots. A more detailed update is coming at the beginning of the next week as soon as I’m back on the grind.

Thanks for reading and good luck!

zache86 5 years, 4 months ago

Haha classic bad run on higher stakes than on lower ones, i guess that's the way it works.
Looking forward for the update buddy!
Btw are you only playing on stars ?

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 4 months ago

Hehe yeah. I don’t really mind it. If I keep working the results at higher stakes will come. Will prob spend November studying and focusing on 500NL to polish my game and regain confidence to take shots at 1K soon.

Yeah I only play on Stars atm!

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 4 months ago

Hey guys I'm excited to announce my new Coaching Project along with fellow RIO Pro and study partner Antonio Miranda

Let us know what you think! I'm really excited for this one.

Good luck all!

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 4 months ago

Hey guys!

Today I came back to the tables after a short break. Overall I felt pretty good and I'm quite motivated to keep grinding on a daily basis. Not sure if I should keep this thread open since it doesn't seem to have many readers but I guess I'll still keep making weekly posts talking about my game quality as well as sharing some hands.

Thanks for reading and good luck!

Jeff_ 5 years, 4 months ago

people read but too shy to write, and overall it is much easier to read than put pressure to make reply or post so keep good work

zache86 5 years, 4 months ago

Whatever suits you best buddy!
If there are others following the thread it'd be nice to leave a comment from time to time.

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 4 months ago

Hey everyone!

Been super busy lately primarily doing a lot of coaching for Heads Up Academy. People seem to be enjoying it and we're creating a HU community already which is super cool.

I've been grinding quite a lot too and I feel pretty happy about my game overall. I'm really excited to keep working and teaching because that's also very helpful for me as a player and it's going to help me to polish my game on a lot of spots.

Today I took Sunday off the tables and didn't go to the office so I've got no hands to show but I'll find some time tomorrow and will post a few interesting ones :)

Thanks for reading and good luck!

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 3 months ago

Hey guys!

Month is over and I just wanted to share my results with you guys.

Quite okay month given that I only played from November 12th and I was really busy with coaching pretty much every day.

I'm really excited to keep working in our coaching project and I'm also gonna try to maintain a good study and play routine this month. The year is almost over and I just wanna do my best til the 20th or so that I will come back home for Christmas.

Thanks for reading guys, back soon with some hands for entertainment purposes. Good luck all :)

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 3 months ago

Hey guys!

I bring you some hands as promised. Could only find three but they are all really interesting IMO. Enjoy :)

You win

Really weird spot, glad to see that I didn't butchered this one :P

One of the most interesting hands I've ever played and reviewed

Thanks for reading guys. Good luck!

zache86 5 years, 3 months ago

It's great to have those hands back!

-Really weird spot, glad to see that I didn't butchered this one :P :
is this an opponent dependent play? because i can't find many bluffs on your side (beside some Ax one club) and villain may come up with many flushes too.

-One of the most interesting hands I've ever played and reviewed:
i'm a bit confused about this hand, i can't map villain's range without thinking it was a bit of a spass , specially because of the size on the turn...i guess some 98o without a diamond might do this but many of them should ch/r flop... thoughts?

Very interesting hands as always!!

Bingo 123 5 years, 3 months ago

That last one is interesting indeed! I think I like it there are not many non diamond combos that we get to the river with. gg imo!

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 3 months ago

Thanks for the support guys!

zache86

  • It is actually a GTO play! Main bluffs come from JcJx, QcQx and offsuit combos with a club such as J8.

  • Pretty much his entire turn raising range contains a diamond since he's not supposed to be raising 89 no diamonds for that sizing. Don't wanna go too deep on this one since I already reviewed for a future video! Stay tuned :)

Bingo 123

Exactly my thoughts when I played the hand!

Jeff_ 5 years, 3 months ago

If I can ask, how is your redline doing? Or how other good regs ?
I'm just curios, in HU it is suppose to be like in 6 max, some have positive some not. Or it is something different.

Beautiful_Fold 5 years, 3 months ago

Hello Nuno, love your work.

I have a question about the GTO Postflop Trainer.

I bought the HU training pack that you and Antonio have designed and I would like to know the strategic options you've input in PIO street by street. Can you post a screen please ?

Thanks in advance and keep up the good work !

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 3 months ago

Hey guys!

I didn’t forget about you :) Will post the End of the Year Update in a couple of days since I’m traveling back home on Wednesday.

Good luck all!

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 3 months ago

END OF THE YEAR UPDATE

Hey guys. My Poker year is over and I wanted to share my results with you.

Graph

Not the best results but not the worst either. Quite funny to see that I ran over EV. I lost around 22k at 1KNL with a terrible run there but I'm happy with my game and performance for the most part. Volume is quite low because I moved to Andorra in the middle of the year and couldn't play a for some time and also because I've been doing a TON of coaching lately. Anyway, I'm happy with my winrate and I'm really excited to keep doing well next year and hopefully increase my monthly volume for 2020.

On a side note, the Heads Up Academy Project was quite a big success. Got 3 groups and we’re creating a pretty solid HU Community. We're planning on forming a few more groups on January and we will also release a new Practical Course on the next few weeks so stay tuned!

Thanks a lot for reading guys and wish you all happy holidays and a great start to 2020! Good luck all :)

zache86 5 years, 3 months ago

Nice Nuno! Not that bad considering coaching and the hu project
Hope you have a nice holiday "y muy felices fiestas" :)

Jeff_ 5 years, 2 months ago

it is time to jump into the action, while can play linus for ''cheap''. I believe see him playing nl2k in a very long time

Nuno Alvarez 5 years, 2 months ago

Haha yeah quite surprising to see him playing that low tbh. Would love to play him but I'm back home for a few more days!

Will update again as soon as I'm on Andorra :)

Hi Nuno,
Are you solving riddles before you play?
I hear lumosity is allright.
Than again I got bored of it quickly.

I'm just trying to tell you something....

Hey guys!

Long time since I posted here. I just wanted to say that I moved my blog to the Heads Up Academy Discord channel but in case that theres some interest I can crosspost it here. Hope you guys are doing well and sorry for the lack of updates. Last months have been very busy for me.

Good luck!

Hi Nuno!
You know you have a couple of followers here but maybe it's not enough.
If you keep posting here some of us will be pleased although i understand if you don't.
