Anyone else smoke weed and play poker stoned?
I find smoking weed greatly helps my mental game. It keeps me relaxed and i take my time to make decisions. When i do get a bad beat or lose a couple buy ins in a session it doesnt affect me as much.

Same here.
After many tries, i found out that the combination of workout+coffee/yerba mate+ moderate weed is the best flow trigger for me. (check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNobzrnSRMc . Steven kotler confirmed my perception was right ) .
I tend to suffer to anxiety/fear/lack of focus and weed helps :)
But only in the late afternoon or night (don't know why).
If i smoke in the morning i feel too sleepy and lazy and also i won't recommend to anyone that wants to accomplish many task during the day :D .
smonking weed make your agressive
Interesting reading that this weed + poker has a positive impact on your game. No doubt weed effects people in different ways. My ability to concentrate would plummet I think if I did this. I can understand how some weed would "take the edge off" your game as you described. Was the same for me with a (single, as in 1 only) beer before road racing.
my experience with weed lies more than 20 years in the past, so i cant comment to much on that. but i do believe smoking weed could potentially "slow down your perception of time" and or could induce some kind of a flow state, but i doubt thats a great longterm solution ;)
Some reflections and thoughts:
-weed affects everyone differently.
-weed can help trigger a flow state because of anandamide. Anandamide is a neurotransmitter that helps with making lateral connections between disparate things. Anandamide is one of the several feel good and performance enhancing neurotransmitters that shows up in flow. Weed gives you a boost of anandamide.
-it's also important to remember that weed, like coffee, social media, playing poker, ect. all produce dopamine. Too much dopa is NOT good for mental well-being and performance. Check out Robert Lustig's work on this. Specifically in the context of the weed discussion, he makes a great distinction between pleasure (dopamine) vs happiness (serotonin). This stuff is really important, imo. Let's just say, I'd bet a large portion of my bankroll that you (yes, literally you reading this now) are getting too much dopamine and it's likely having adverse effects on performance and well-being. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG_jtVWXj5g
-There are many ways to get an edge in poker. The poker player thinks myopically, the Poker player knows and feels that's it's all connected. There are 4 games being played in Poker: intellectual, social, biological and energetic. A master is winning all of these.
When we talk about things like dopamine and serotonin we are talking about the biology game. Which is an area of the game most high performers lack mastery of. This means there is a huge opportunity to gain an edge here.
tldr:
1. weed may help you, and it may not
2. be mindful of your dopamine consumption (addiction)
3. win the biology game
This is an extremely interesting discussion. The fact is that obviously a huge amount of online poker players (and live, but especially when people are at home) smoke weed on and off throughout the week while they play and study. I, personally, do not drink and haven't had but a drink or two a year for several years now. I stopped drinking when I started playing poker. I don't use any drugs other than marijuana and I eat healthy, drink a lot of water + coffee throughout the day, am physically fit, and play/study poker full time while also making poker videos and developing HUDs.
In all reality, the only negative that smoking pot brings to this lifestyle is a slight hit to the bankroll each month as a result of purchasing it. It most definitely enhance my focus, interest in unique spots, and increases the amount of volume I put in. Everybody is going to be different though and in the past, before I built up my tolerance to THC or after a t-break, smoking too much negatively effected my self esteem, motivation, and outlook. After a week or two this subsided but it definitely should be noted.
I don't recommend anyone use any drugs or alcohol but I also don't recommend that they don't. I'm in absolutely no position to advise others on how to live. That said, I do believe that if you're going to only use marijuana - as I do - you're living a pretty sober life in today's world. It has absolutely helped me overall to not include alcohol in my repertoire. It is also clear that smoking in moderation is the real path to true enjoyment of the plant and is the same with most pleasures in life.
Once again: Edit is still not working and hasn't been for a few days now.
I thought it was only me!
It's been a lot longer than a few days for me. I'm not sure edit has worked in weeks.
Smoking weed time to time and playing also, love it actually, I'm like on doping then, can see everything, can do everything :)
Don't want to get into too much again sadly, as i was smoking it 5years pretty much every day and it did actually started effect some mental thing
Also have done aderall and stuff like this, for short-term - absolute beast, long-term, not so sure :)
Seems to have a positive impact on live play. Counter-intuitively seems to help with patience.
