Advice on moving moving up SLOWLY and BRM... PLEASE

Hello my SN is flash2717 and I play on Bovada.  I have been playing for about 7 years and grew up during the epic poker boom.  I do struggle for some reason when my BR gets to a point of being around 1.5k+ though.  I have been playing for about 7 years so I do understand how to keep a solid BRM guide in place...  Here is a copy of my most recent one I made...  I explain at the end what I need help on so please RIO members and PROS.  Help me out please...

Bankroll Management

Starting BR = $300(I have $700 ready to deposit if I need to but I hope not to need it)

Starting Limit = 50NL-6max

Stop Loss = 4-BI’s and I must quit
and do something productive.  This having
to do work stuff will hopefully keep me motivated to not tilt…

Must play 4k hands + have the BR
requirements to move up in limits and then evaluate my win rate (BB/100) and be
honest with myself on moving up by using the formula I made up…   Also remember that when you move up in
limits you game select and continue to mix in your old limits  (Volume + Win Rate + BR = Move Up or
NOT)

Shot Taking = 15 BI’s at the next
level and if I drop 5 BI’s I will drop down limits.

(10 BI’s at 100NL = 20BI’s at 50NL)

ADHERE TO THESE RULES VERY STRICTLY

Schedule/Focus

*Play 6
days/week at an average of 2.5 hours a day played minimum.  Playing 4-tables I can get 300 hands an
hour.  That means I should be able to get
in 3k-5k hands per week.

Do a pre-session quick “regroup” of
my thoughts and listen to some music while I read over some notes I have of
starting hand req. and some sayings I have.

Do a post-session review of how I did
on my main focus for that session I came up with during my pre-session
“regroup”.

On my 1-2 days off I will not do
anything poker wise except maybe watch a video on something I feel may be a
leak in my game and takes vigorous notes.
MUST TAKE 1 FULL DAY OFF PER 2-WEEKS MIN.

Take at least 1 day off per week to
review PT and do some HH reviews to check my lines and stats.

Get a study/sweat group
together!!!  (About 4-8 guys in limits
from 25nl-400nl)

Evaluate every 2-weeks with my coach or
my study group

Read the Mental Game of Poker
Daily…  Reread the Mental Game of Poker…
And reread

Keep my mind fresh at all times while
at the tables.  (THIS SHIT IS REAL!!!)

*NOT SURE ABOUT THIS MATH…  HAVE NO CLUE ON HANDS PER HOUR IN 6-MAX(70/hr?)

I have been following this very strictly...  Till today I went CRAZY...  I started playing 400nl and 600nl and lost about 2.3k of my 3k BR I had built up from $300...  Today for some reason I was playing 100nl and the money seemed so insignificant..  I am sad to say that because I have done this far to many times.  I play very well and my graph at 50nl and 100nl is great.  I just struggle to put the money aside and play the game I love so much as it is.  I also need to pay attention to the times when I really am not in the mood to bear down an focus.  This is by far the most costly mistake I make on a weekly basis.  I am reading the Mental Game of Poker by Jared Lindtner*(sorry if i messed up his name).  I do so good when the money is smaller and my BR is smaller.  I undetstand the magnitude of each hand and try to make the best decision every time.  But, when I get a BR built up I am ready to gamble it seems.  I don't have the same discipline at the table.  I may call more 3 bets when I wouldnt when I am playing lower and most certainly better.

Any Advice or Guidance on this matter would be great.  Maybe a goals process or something???  HELP!!!

I only read the first half or so but it seems like you want to be WAY too aggressive. 6 buy ins at 50nl isn't giving yourself much of a chance to succeed. It's going to be fairly easy to run bad and blow that BR. Start really low and try to put in good volume. By doing it this way you're going to have a better idea if you're a winner in your games, build confidence, risk less money and give yourself a better chance of moving up/ staying up long term.

Yeah, I wouldn't use any less than 30BI as you're moving up.  Take shots when you have 20BI of the next level, and if you lose 5 drop back down (so you still have 30BI of the level below).

+1 on dodgybobs strategy, I use the exact same one and it works well for me. I had a problem in the past with playing 1 or maybe 2 sessions every other month that pretty much destroyed my results where I lost from 6-10 BI, cashed out and said that I would never be playing poker again. I dont know if you recoginze this behavior but here are two tips that has helped me a lot:

Play short sessions: Set a time limit on your sessions, my limit is 90 min. This helps me to focus on playing my A-game more often and it will also prevent tilt. I dont like to think so much about how many hands I play every month, instead I focus on playing when Im well rested and motivated to play my very best.

Stop loss: I use a 3 bi stop loss. If you always stick to your stop loss strategy you will never have those nightmare sessions where you lose to much and consider quitting poker and buying something nice for the little bit of money you still got left in your poker account. Be VERY strict with your stop loss and combine it with a less aggressive BRM-strategy.

Like everyone else has said, 6(or 14 since you really have $700 you could use if needed) buy ins isn't enough to have much success. It's pretty easy to go on 5-10 buy in downswings and as someone who already has tilt issues, you'll end up broke pretty quickly. If this is the only money you can use for poker I'd stick to 30-40 buy ins and takes shots at 20-25 for the next level.

If you can afford to replenish your roll I see no problem using a 15-20 buy in bankroll, at least until you get to 200NL or so. Bovada is pretty fishy so being aggressive with your roll is fine as long as you can afford it.

I've had the same problems. I'd grind 100NL and make good money, bink a MTT for $6,000 and jump right into 1KNL planning to fire 1 buy in and get off. Next thing I know I dropped 10+ buy ins, half on coolers and the other half on bad play and I busted my roll again. Competition gets better the higher you go and the pressure of winning or losing a pot gets higher with it. If you can't play a 100BB pot without breaking something if you lose then you're not ready for that stake.

Cliffs:

You can't win any money sitting on the sidelines. Always leave yourself outs.

I too started playing online poker around 2005. I remember reading empiremaker's post about needing 100 buy ins for 5/10. I thought this was too much. After a 9 year career and busting 3-4 6 figure bankrolls I realized, you actually do need at least 100 buy-ins.(Unless if you're a genius and apply the Kelly formula correctly every single time. But then again if you were a genius, you wouldn't be asking for advice.)

If it's the only money you have to your name then 100 buy ins is a good idea. If it isn't it is WAY too nitty. Playing on a site like Bovada you don't need more than 40-50 because everyone is pretty terrible. If you have other money coming in 20-30 is fine. If you can't win there you need to reevaluate on how you play poker.

Hey guys.  I really appreciate the post..  I do usually start with min 20BI. I only started with 10 to help me focus better at the beginning.  I have a great job and other income.  So, the money part sucks but I have a good income coming in that it's not a big deal.  I don't care who you are though, when you grind for a month and a half at 50nl to get to a 2k BR and lose 1.5k of it in one day it hurts really bad .  I am a winning player over about 25k hands at 50nl at about a 8bb/100.  But, what Skirken said is exactly me in a nut shell..  Lose 10BI and crush my winnings from  that month in 1 or 2 sessions and then swear off poker for a month and come back and do very well at 50nl and 100nl and I will grind my BR up to about 2k or 3k and I lose focus and desire to play a couple sessions and lose BIG.  I need to be able to identify these feelings and not play when I am feeling them.  I am a winning player till I jump up in stakes and I most certainly am not good enough to be playing 400nl yet.  Especially with only 8BI at that limit...  Those guys are Way to good for me...  I do appreciate the help and I hope to see more insight to come...  Great Site To Join
