Live 5/10, awkward spot OOP
Flop (70): K54 two-tone
I flop top two, gutter to nuts, and backdoor flush draw. Small blind checks, I bet 60, a couple players fold, and MP raises to 210. We're about 1800 deep to start the hand. It folds back to me. MP is a young guy; I haven't played with him much, but seemingly a competent pro. Not especially aggro or out-of-line, I think his approach to the game is similar to mine: mostly trying to make strong hands and get paid off by the many loose-passive players in the game. I obviously have to be strong to be betting into the field here, and he knows that. I don't expect him to have any pure bluffs, but he can certainly be raising with strong semi-bluffs, as well as strong made hands. I wasn't sure if my hand was strong enough to go with on the flop, but felt it was too strong to fold, so in the moment I ended up calling without much of a plan for future streets.
Turn (490): offsuit 2
Check, check.
River (490): offsuit 9
I check, he pots. I was really confused by his line. The flush draw and 76 missed, but I would expect him to continue barreling with most of his draws. I'd also observed that he was capable of checking behind strong hands on early streets, intending to get paid off later (he had cbet QQ on Q72, checked behind a 7 turn, and raised the river; also check 2*** on 222 as the pre-flop raiser). In short I had a bad feeling, but had trouble putting him on a hand.
Interested in thoughts on all streets: do you prefer a flop lead, or check-raise? Can we get it in on the flop? Any merit to leading the turn as a semi-bluff? Do you call the river?
Also generally confused about these OOP spots massively multi-way. Obviously I try to avoid playing out of position as much as possible, but it's often limped around to the BB. This leads to playing trashier hands than I'm used to, and I find myself getting lost OOP when I flop strong, but not super-nutted. I think in a tough line-up it's questionable if we should have ANY leading range here, but against so many loose-passives it's mandatory to start getting value sometimes. It just leads to weird spots when I get raised, since my leading range is transparently so strong, I feel like the hand strength required to stack off in these spots is through the roof.
