Jam turn or try to bink the river?
Hey ladies and gents,
I've taken this spot from a recent video of mine; RIO member Roberto flagged up this hand and I thought it would be an idea to get a range of viewpoints on the spot. Unfortunately I can't find the hand history in my PT4, so I've taken a screenshot of the situation (sorry if the pic quality is poor!), or you can watch the hand @15:00 in my live $0.25/.50 session review. Given that the session recording was live, I think it'll be easier to explain/discuss my thought process looking at it retrospectively.
Quick summary of the action: I open pre, get the SB caller. The SB check/pots the flop and pots the turn pretty quickly, leaving us with the decision.
So, the question that was put me: 'Curious what you think the benefits are of calling turn?' (and not jamming).
Some of my responses:
-Intuitively it was a spot I felt I had, and will always have, 0 fold equity. If he has a made-hand or is semi-bluffing with some kind of better combo draw, they aren't going to fold to a jam anyway and on brick rivers I get to save the remainder of my stack.
-I don't think too many 45xx combos would be flatting the sb. If they were to raise this flop however, they would likely have backup to go with it and so have me in pretty bad shape. Weaker AA or KK combos can very easily just be flatting pre against an early-position open and then be raising when the flop isn't particularly good for my range and they have some draws they dominate with a nut/2nd nfd to go with their overpair.
-I'm never folding on any river that I hit either of my fd's (or obviously any of my nut-straights) so I don't think there are a ton of situations I get bluffed off the best hand. This seems kind of counterintuitive; if I'm calling any flush completing river anyway it seems like I might as well just stick it in now, but again, I think there is some benefit to folding rivers like board-pairs/complete bricks.
-I don't think I ever have much more than 55% but could only have a little over 30%, so my jam doesn't really accomplish much and I was taking the less high-variance route.
Just wanted some other opinions on this spot as I'm sure it's something people have been faced with before, and feel free to totally disagree with my thought process!
