Got check Raised on the River with low boat~

CO: $46.22
BN: $33.85
SB: $50
BB: $43.33
UTG: $50.50 (Hero)
HJ: $58.53
5handed~
Villain is a 20/12/3 TAG with 18% check raise. Villain fights for some pots.
Preflop ($0.75) (6 Players)
Hero was dealt 5 6 A 3
Hero raises to $1.50, HJ folds, BN calls $1.50, SB calls $1.25, BB calls $1
Since, it's 5 handed....I decided to R with this hand. I usually just fold pre.
Flop ($6.00) 6 5 K (5 Players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets $4, BN folds, SB calls $4, BB folds
My plan was b/f this flop. If got called, I might bet on heart turn again.
Turn ($14.00) 5 (3 Players)
SB checks, Hero checks
After, villain called flop. I thought he could had hands like pair+sd, 2pair, oesd, AA/bdfd. I think this villain ll x/r the flop with sets in multiway most of the time.
I decided to check this turn, cuz I need to pot control a bit and for deception too. Some time he might bluff river or call with worse.
River ($14.00) 9 (3 Players)
SB checks, Hero bets $8, SB raises to $22, Hero calls $14
Villain checked the river, I vb on the small side and hope to get a call.
But, then villain R my river bet. I was so confused at first, But I thought he ll bet most his boat hands on the river since I checked the turn and I rarely bluff this river. He ll lose value to check river.
I didn't think he could play a boat like this way. The key points that I made this call is I could vb a str8 on the river and he didn't x/r on the flop and I checked turn for deception and also kind of a small bet. Im not really sure if I made the right call or not, but I did got with my gut.
Should I just bet the turn instead? Some times I like to mix up a bit.
Final Pot
SB has K A 7 4 Hero has 5 6 A 3 Hero wins $56
