So, this is a pretty common flop spot that we often face in PLO. Our range is inherently stronger than BTN's, but on this texture, we just don't connect with it that frequently. For a while, my basic approach had been to c-bet with most of my range, and then check to ch/f with the parts that don't connect at all, mostly because while this texture doesn't hit our range too often, it doesn't hit our opponent's extremely often either. The issue that I've been facing lately, especially in these SPR's of 5+ spots, is that I find myself getting floated and raised at a really high frequency, usually resulting in me getting out played in the hand. Specifically vs floats when I hold like KK+bdfd.
Obviously, this is unacceptable, so I'm trying to come up with a better strategy.
One thing I've been trying to work into my game is a check/calling range and a ch/ring range. I haven't really worked out the kinks as to which hand classes work best in a vacuum for which ranges, but in general, I try to look for a few things when deciding to ch/ca.
1) Hands that have good equity and improvability but can't stand much heat when raised and are usually flipping or dogs when the money goes in. Something like AKQJ with hearts.
2) Hands with SD value/good bluff catching abilities, but are dogs vs the opp's get it in range. Something like KK98 w/ clubs.
3) Air hands that can't bet or ch/ca, but have some improvability when it goes ch/ch
Then obv doing it w/ stronger combinations to protect my ranges is a must. Or if someone is just barreling off their range, I'd check a lot of hands.
Some of the +'s to checking are:
+While this hand class is a dog to his get it in range, I'm usually a favorite vs his bet when checked to range, or at worse, I have plenty of equity to ch/ca a flop bet.
+I allow myself to realize my equity over at least 1 street.
+I realize some of my SD equity the times it goes ch/ch as well as get some information
+When I check, I gain value from the 5%-20% equity parts of his range that would likely just fold flop if I bet(something like QJ85)
One issue I've always had with having a ch/ca range in these spots is that we allow our opponent to realize his equity with all of those holdings that are marginal calls/folds vs a c-bet(25-35% equity range). I feel like betting and getting those to fold for us is huge, but the downside to that(or + size to checking) is that we miss out on potential value from the parts of his range w/ 5-20% equity vs us. I'm not sure whether the value we gain by inducing from the lower end equity holds outweighs the value we give up by letting him realize his 25-35% equity holdings. Does anyone have thoughts on this or more to add?
That's where I'm at with this spot so far. Anything you guys could add would be great. Or, if you disagree w/ something, let me know why.
