Optimal calling frequency on river depending on turn action
In lecture 5 (part 1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHcrsMPQtgo
Matt "Hoss_TBF" Hawrilenko has an example which I'm having a hard time understanding.
It's a hand where Hero has AA and on the river the board is K,J,8,5,K and Villain bets out big. At around 34min he talks about our river value range having to call 40% of the overbet becuase 1-alpha gives the minmum defence frequency. My problem isn't with this but when he says in order to adjust our calling range we can choose to increase our value betting range on the turn and therefore our valuerange will be wider on the river and therefore a 40% defence frequency will include a somewhat wider range. But isn't our value range the same as our total range on the river here? What I mean is betting the turn or not shouldn't matter since we are still ending up on the river with the same total range since we are in position and close the action on the turn. So when we look at the minimum defence frequency how can it matter what hands we choose to include in our turn value betting range since those same hands are still in our total range on the river and we can still include them in our calling frequency?
I'm not sure I'm clear here but what I guess I mean is when choosing a 40% defence frequency on the river shouldn't those 40% be chosen from our total range and not just the range we chose to valuebet on the turn? I mean look at an extreme let's suppose we chose to play some weird inducing line and we check the turn with KK. On the river villain overbets. According to Matt we can't call with KK since it's not part of our turn value betting range and therefore it's not in our value defence range on the river?? Why don't I understand this? What am I not getting here?
