hand i watched in Proview video of $8.80 freezout
sorry, no raw HH - this was a Proview video where Espen(pro) chimed in on a RIO member's play
it was 8 handed 30/60 level. effective stack at 2670 who opens to 180 from CO.
(only 12 hands on villain 58 vpip, 25 pfr, cbet 100(not sure of sample size for cbet, 1 or 2 max most likely)) so we are 45bb deep
hero decides to flat JsJd from SB - i don't care to discuss this, i want to discuss postflop as played
(420)flop: 7c, Ah, 3c - Hero check/calls a bet of 210 (our hand does not contain a club)
(840)turn: 9s - hero check/calls a bet of 420
(1680) river: Th - hero check/folds a bet of 660
this is what I typed in the video notes session hoping from a response from the pro, Espen:
What I want to discuss is our postflop check/call, check/call, check/fold line. I do not mind the first call on the flop, getting 3 to 1. Again on the turn we get 3 to 1 when he fires half pot again. Here you state "we have terrible equity if he does have the ace," indeed that is the case. I think here we need to make our decision to fold or commit to a river call on a blank card. I personally do not see the merit in check/calling both flop and turn only to surrender the river on a pretty dry runout. you state "i don't really see him bluffing anymore at this point" come the river but what changes? you see him bluffing the turn though on a dry nine? perhaps you don't love the user check/call on the turn but you certainly did not seem to mind it. On the river is when we get our best price yet, 3.55 to 1, so we only have to be right 1 in 4.55 times. I am not exactly advocating a call but in this spot i do not like a turn call and then a river fold on that runout. his sizing looks like it is begging for a call but perhaps that is what villain is hoping that we read it as, a value bet. Therefore it is possible he is making his bluff look like a value bet and again, this is the best price we have had on any street and now we're deciding to fold, i don't like it. Are two calls really going to stop him from bluffing the river a high enough frequency of the time to make this a fold now? Anyone care to chime in with some thoughts?
what kind of villains would we take this particular line versus? Let's say for theory's sake, the villain had stats of 12 vpip/10 pfr(again this sample was only 12 hands), in this exact hand, are we still check/calling two streets?
Or, lets say literally no stats at all; we still took the same preflop line(called 3x in SB versus CO raise, 45bb deep, early in tourney), do we like this post flop line?
one other thing i will note: i have always been a person who in this spot adopted the mindset "if we call turn, we have to call river(on blank runouts at least)," but I have been told this is flawed thinking by a very successful player who i respect. basically, it is flawed thinking because villains bluff frequency should reduce each street, correct?
